    About the Author

    Puberty the Autism Way

Puberty is something that is very difficult for most teenagers to deal with. We are dealing with changing body parts and serious emotional changes that cause us to think and feel in different ways than we have ever experienced or felt before. When we do not know how to manage our emotions it can cause meltdowns and tantrums that teenagers would not normally be going through without puberty taking its course in our bodies.

Puberty was very different for me. I have autism so like everything else in life puberty was a bit more challenging for me. There were so many things about puberty that I did not and could never understand. All I knew was that something was happening to my body and I had no idea what it was. There was a number of years in high school that I thought I was a freak or something because of the way my body was changing and all of my emotions were all over the place. I was a nervous wreck as I went through high school.

I did not have many friends in high school and the ones I did have we did not talk much about our bodies or puberty. Later in life in my studies of autism I would learn that most kids who have friends actually discuss going through puberty with their peers and that helps them find someone to relate to where they can learn about their bodies together.

When your friends do not talk to you or educate you about puberty that means the only place that you would be able to be educated or get information about puberty would be from your parents.

Probably the most important job a parent has is protecting their child and keeping them safe. Sometimes in order to protect your child that means that you have to educate him or her and teach him or her about things in life. Life is full of constant changes and if we do not help prepare the kids for the upcoming changes it will become challenging for us to succeed in life.

Children with autism will often require extra guidance and a little bit more supervision as they are going through all of these changes because not only do that not know what is going on with their bodies, they also struggle dearly with knowing how to communicate what is going on with their bodies. They will often struggle with knowing how to reach out or communicate with someone about all of their feelings.

As a parent to a child with autism you should not always assume that your child knows what is going on with their body. You should not always assume that nothing is wrong if you do not reach out and
