    Zombie Rush - Joseph Hansen

    Introduction:

    The Clinic

    The Good Doctor:

The clinic was so frantic that he couldn’t help but be excited. One patient after another filed in seeking the comfort of the very capable hands of the good doctor. He had studied in the Far East, Africa and as far north as Finland, never had he seen anything like this and there was absolutely nothing that he could do about it. Not only was there no cure there wasn’t even a treatment. This was like the mythical or even biblical shit that he would never be able to study, unless it happened right there in front of him.

Last night in his condo, he felt like a child as he stood in wonderment behind the sliding door on to the balcony with the lights off. It appeared as a giant spectral cloud thundering across the night sky spreading its essence upon all of the accessible chattel below. A sound like hoofs pounding as a low rumbling thunder shaking building as it covered the entire mass of night sky. Like a blanket it fell across the city and continued on into the horizon infecting any who braved the night air. Sound ceased to exist for the talented doctor as he instinctively started to pack his bug out bag wild fantasies filling his thoughts.

Life would change tomorrow, not only for just him but for the entire world, the new age has begun. He received no message or forewarning but still he knew, he knew it in his bones, the world had changed and it was now time to play. His time had finally come.

He remembered the flash of light and the thunder of hooves when he awoke the next morning. Now the sunlight wasn’t quite the same color as if the sun itself was fading out leaving a pale, lack luster feel.

His desires for the opportunity to exercise his passion upon the whole of this backwater little town would come to fruition today. He wanted to see the looks of terror as they realized him, the light in their eyes as their bodies shook uncontrollably upon the revelations which the good doctor would bestow upon them.

His father’s phrase Don’t shit where you eat! Flashed through his mind time and again and he knew... pa pa was right. You shouldn’t shit where you eat, unless of course you can be something that you are not. A mini corporation with a bogus paper trail soon started buying useless properties across several counties just so that the good doctor wouldn’t have to shit where he ate. Now all he needed was the time to pursue his dreams and that time had come. Today would be his last day at the clinic.

The spectral image of light intrigued him. It was like a herald to those like him if there were any. He mused that maybe this would bring him the era he lusted for, before slamming the last of his scotch that was watered perfectly from the melted ice and drifted off to bed. Then the dreams came. Dreams so vivid he couldn’t control himself and awoke to the wet sheets of a teenager with a crush. If all dreams were like that he probably wouldn’t have to do the things he did and the world could be a much safer place.

He went through the morning rituals and stepped out on to his balcony just to see if maybe something had changed, maybe his dreams could come true. He looked at this bug out bag with longing and decided to bring it with him to work today.

The town had a ghost like feel to it the traffic, virtually nonexistent much like Sunday mornings as most of the town still slept in anticipation of going to church to be forgiven for their latest indiscretions as insignificant as they may be. Pleading lies to a potentially mythical entity in hopes death. The good doctor had seen death many times in many different ways and he knew the truth of death. He could only hope to bring enough of this truth to people before his own time expired.

A sense of wonderment came over him as he saw a man stumble out on to the curb and fall upon a lone person walking down the street. Arterial blood spewed from the victim and the good doctor realized that some dreams no matter how incredulous... do come true.

He made his way to the underground garage where he parked his Lexus and drove to the clinic where he entered with a light hearted bounce to his step. He smiled genuinely to his first set of patients and inwardly laughed at the crowd gathering in his lobby with various cuts and bite wounds wondering how many he would get to see as the good doctor before his true nature took over and he was able to seize the moment. How far could this new world spread and how could he be sure it was really happening. A mistake now could doom him to life of running and hiding from the law as well as himself. Yet slow to react to what was coming could leave him dead or even worse unable to exploit the situation. He must be very aware of what happens in the very near future.

Only a few hours into the day he smiled behind his mask as screaming from the lobby caused furtive glances from the patients and nurse as the doctor put his young patient’s feet into stirrups so he could proceed with the examination. He smiled re-assuredly to the girl knowing how uncomfortable this was and how he had to play a more hands on roll since they were short staffed today.

Nurse, could you go and see what exactly is going on? He asked, he had seen a man and his wife when they first came into the lobby, bite marks evident, he already looking as if he was no longer in his right mind. Could this condition spread like the zombie shows on TV? How delicious!

The nurse looked at everyone nervously as the doctor peeked out the door again barely able to contain his glee. It was happening! The nurse knew that policy stated that two needed to be in the room for this type of exam, but the girl’s mother was here and the lobby did seem to be creating a lot of mayhem. Judy the receptionist was in a panic trying to keep everything together and sounded as if she were being mauled by the crowd. She smiled reassuringly to the mom and removed her gloves on the way out closing the door behind her.  Though Montgomery clinic may be a small clinic they did still adhered to state guidelines as much as possible but sometimes you had to make the exception.

There is a lot going on out there Mrs. Parks and we really can’t afford to be disturbed if I am going to get to those other patients today, would you mind if I locked the door?

After all of these years you have to ask me something like that? Lock it bolt it pile chairs if front of it, slap it and call me Suzy. Susan Parks said trying to be funny and hopefully crack that -all business- shell around the good
