    Introduction

Student World is a group of college lecturers and professors. We understand how high school and college students feel when they are given to read literature, especially classics. They generally get lost in the long and complex sentences, a parade of characters, and shifting narratives, thus making it difficult for them to make head from tail.

Our guide books are written in very simple and clear language, without exaggerating the facts. We do not include our opinions and never become too subjective while analyzing the works of literature.

We try to make our books as easy as possible for students to read them and learn from them so that when they read the original texts of the classics or other works of literature, they are prepared and they know what the work is about.

In this book we have included introduction to the book, plot overview, about major characters, complete summary, and critical analysis.

Although we know that some students do not want to read the original text because they prepare only to pass their exams or tests, yet we insist that they read the original text of Three Day Road so that they can understand the subtle aspects of the narrative which can't be presented in this treatise.

The Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden was first published on 17th of March, 2005. The narrative revolves around two major characters, Xavier and Elijah. They happen to be two young Cree men who volunteer for the war. In the war, they serve as snipers.

When the novel was published it received a lot of critical acclaim. Most of the reviews were highly positive.

The author is said to have also been inspired by the real life Indigenous Canadian war hero Francis who was known as ‘Peggy’ by his fellow soldiers. He was said to be the most effective sniper in the First World War. He had killed 378 Germans and captured 300. He was the most highly decorated Canadian soldier. Peggy appears as a minor character in the present novel, although he was a big source of inspiration for writing this novel.

According to the author, the Cree and Ojibwa concept of life moving in a circle gets reflected in the circular narrative of the present novel. The original draft of the novel had a more traditional linear narrative.

The book gained popularity right after its publication in 2005 and it has continued to grow ever since. The book has received several prestigious literary awards.

    Plot Overview

At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to two Cree Indians. They are taking a canoe journey. When the novel begins, they happen to be anchored. These two Cree Indians are Xavier and Niska.

The narrative begins to shift forwards and backwards, telling the stories of these two Cree Indians. Both of them are from the bush of Northern Ontario. Niska happens to have grown up independently and spiritually. Niska happens to have experienced the battlefields of Europe during the First World War.

Xavier is her nephew and Elijah is Xavier’s best friend. The war separates these two friends.

We learn that Xavier had been addicted to morphine. He had had a leg amputation. He describes the pain he suffered while recovering from the amputation.

As Niska paddles the canoe towards her home in the bush, Xavier remembers the war. He remembers reaching Europe with his friend Elijah. The battle is going on. They are in the military. The military officials recognize them for their sniping ability. It is revealed that Xavier and Elijah are snipers working for the army in Europe.

During the war, Xavier witnesses a lot of death and destruction. It begins to wear on him, making him depressed. On the other hand, Elijah does not feel like that. Seeing so much cruelty, he becomes bolder and more violent. He becomes kind of more bloodthirsty on and off the battlefield. He takes morphine to calm him down, but the more he takes morphine, the more he becomes violent.

Niska has a different story to tell about destruction. To her destruction
