    Chapter One

Olive Brothwood shook her head at her daughter, Sadie, biting her lower lip and refusing to put the fork in her hand. Nineteen-year-old Sadie wasn't sure what to do so she picked up her mother's hand up and gently placed the fork in her hand and guided it to her lips. Sadie hoped she’d remember to open her mouth and eat but the food fell into her lap and onto the table for Mother didn’t open her mouth.

Tears stung Sadie’s eyes as she looked at her. Mother’s mental status had gotten worse over the past couple of months and the woman went from being a strong mother figure in Sadie’s life to being one who needed to be mothered. The doctor thought Mother had some sort of a mental illness that was making her revert back to her childhood and the inability to know how to do the most basic things for herself.

Papa came in from the fields where he had been helping the stable boy train a young horse. His eyes flitted to his wife and back to his daughter as he shook his head and put his hat on the hat rack. A proper southern gentleman, Jordan Brothwood had lost all of the slaves during the war. Lucky for the Brothwoods, Magnolia Stand didn't suffer the same fate as many of the plantations nearby did. The oldest estate well hidden by the forest stayed free of the sieges as they showed hospitality to the many soldiers passing through, Magnolia Stand played host until the end of the war to convalescing soldiers. That was fifteen years ago and during the time, Sadie was much too young to know any better. She had been but a little apple in her father's eyes as she happily toddled around the grounds unaware of the horrors that raged on the outside of the Magnolia Stand property. Her older sister, Lois, older by a good ten years, had met a convalescing soldier and married him. The couple ended up moving north to New York. Mother was much older when she gave birth to Sadie, for she was old when she had Lois.

Has she forgot how to eat? Papa asked has he moved around the table.

Sadie nodded and looked at Mother with pity. I even put the fork in her hand and scooped up the food. She did bring it to her mouth but she hit just below her lips and the food spilled onto the floor. Sadie stepped back feeling defeated and not sure what to do to get Mother to eat. After Father had washed, he came to Mother’s side and took the seat next to his wife.

Here, let me try, Jordan said to his daughter as he reached for the fork. Olive ate as long as Sadie's father shoveled the food into her mouth. It was as if Mother had turned into a baby who only knew to open her mouth when the fork brushed her lips. Some of the food fell out of her mouth and onto the floor and down her dress. All Sadie could do was watch in horror as the strong woman who took care of her all these years deteriorated before her eyes.

Jordan shook his head, for he did not like his daughter having to witness such a thing. He hated that
