Every sentence George writes gives the lie to this bit of lazy journalese.

      This collection of George Scialabba's short writings spans years and addresses so many questions posed by our modern ways of life. No matter that I haven't read most of the books he discusses—throughout these essays, Scialabba proves an engaged, thoughtful, erudite, and companionable guide.
