DEDICATION

This book I dedicate to Dick Gold, one of the nicest and funniest comedians I had the privilege of working with during my time at sea.

I’ll never forget him as he opened his show with the statement, My name is Dick Gold, if you can’t remember that, think of the days in the army when they called your last name out first! Dick was the man that inspired me to move from grand illusions to stand-up style parlor tricks using comedy patter.

FOREWORD

What a weird title! Why call a book It’s A Stage I’m Going Through? It was really difficult trying to think of something unique to do with stage and parlor magic and this was holding me back to publish this book. Eventually I thought back on my career and remember twice in my life where a stage had collapsed underneath me.

As I work mainly in the corporate events and conference market, most hotels and smaller conference venues have portable stages that are built too measure. These have steel pipes and structures underneath them that are locked into place. As they are often only half a meter in height, often the event teams just lock the minimum pieces in place to save time. The problem is that I am a tall man and quote heavy!

The first time a stage like this collapsed under me, I sat on my rear end, look at the audience and said, Welcome to the floor show! By chance I had a comment to cover the accident. Everything after that was a breeze. Years later I heard another line from a friend of mine that I could have used and never ever considered that I would have a stage collapse on me again. When it did, I was ready and piped up, Oh, it’s just a stage I’m going through! The laughter was thunderous and again, the rest of the show I could have done anything, and everyone was behind me.

These days I tend to do sound, lighting and stage checks. I literally jump around on the stage to make sure it will hold me. Nevertheless, that’s the story behind the title of the book, as I myself have done most routines and tricks described within these pages on such stages.

You will also notice that I have included numerous You Tube video links for you to watch the tricks I describe. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly that you can see these routines are not a theoretical thumb-suck and they actually work. Secondly, it just makes it easier seeing the trick being performed. At the end of the book I have also included links to many of my TV series and programs as I have always found that watching other magicians perform often triggers new ideas.

I am a comedy performer and love humor, hence you will find numerous patter and joke suggestions for many of the tricks. As I have been performing for over thirty years now, I have collected tons of idea, routines and tricks, plus developed many of my own ideas from the base knowledge and experience I have gained. I have tried my utmost to credit originators and those that have inspired me throughout these pages. If I have left someone out, it has not been on purpose as I truly believe in giving credit where it is due.

All that is left for me to say is that I trust you enjoy the book and have as much fun with the tricks, routines and ideas as they have given me over the years.

ACES IN GLASS

The magician shuffles the four Aces into a pack and places everything into a tall-stemmed glass that he holds at the stem. Every time he brushes a silk past the glass, the Aces appear visually, one at a time, in front of the deck. You can view the trick here as part of my Trick of the Week series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LW3IRne_Ks

As a youngster in Port Elizabeth I recall just starting out in magic and joining the East Cape Magic Circle and recall watching my first Tommy Cooper video as someone had just bought a Betamax video machine and had a friend in the UK that had sent him this video. At this same meeting another magician did a trick with shuffled yellow alphabet cards in a class where I can only assume a word was forced and every time the silk was passed over the glass, the letters of the word appeared in the correct order.

The glass did not have a long stem and as a youngster I could even figure out what was going on. Over the years the idea of the effect fascinated me, and back in 80’s I started experimenting with the idea, eventually moving onto an expensive long stemmed glass that was better at hiding the twist move involved. I also experimented with the silks, as a thick non see-through scarf worked well, but wasn’t as magical as a pure silk. Unfortunately the lighter pink, red and white silks didn’t work as one could see what was happening. However, dark blue and purple still gave the illusion of being see-through, yet managed to hide the secret really well.

You will need a long-stemmed, red wine glass - available at most up-market liquor stores. I suggest you take a the pack of cards along for sizing and make sure that the whole deck fits snugly into the glass. I suggest you stick with bicycle cards, then you know the size will always remain the same. Also, buy two or three glasses and keep spare. They break! If you only have one, it’s a real pain to search for another. I keep mine in an old Glenfiddich whisky tube with tissue paper as padding when I travel. See photos below.

You will also need an 18" dark color silk, a regular deck of cards and four, gimmicked, double-faced cards; these you just glue back to back as follows: AC/5D, AH/AC, AD/5D, AS/AD.

Place the 5D on the face of the normal deck. Now, have your prepared double facers stacked at the back of the deck as follows: Place the pack face down. The first card on top of the face down deck is the AC/5D, then AH/AC, followed by AD/5D, and finally the AS/AD card with the AD now facing YOU!

Keep the gimmicked stack at the bottom of the deck without exposing them, show the faces of the cards and remove the four normal Aces. Make sure the normal 5D is still your first face-up card. Once the Aces have been removed, square everything up and stick the Aces back into the pack at random so that the audience believe you have ‘lost’ them randomly within the deck.

Place the entire deck into the bowl of the wine glass - remember that it must be a nice tight fit. Hold the glass at the stem. Pick up the silk and wipe it across the bowl of the glass, at the same time turning the stem of the glass 180 degrees between your fingers. Basically you are doing a ‘paddle move’ with the stem of the glass. This creates a visual appearance of the first Ace!

Take note: the longer and thinner the stem of the glass, the more effective the trick and the less noticeable the turning of the stem is.

The AD is now the front card - pull it out and place it at the back of the deck. Remember it’s a double facer with the AS behind it that appears next. Repeat the move with the silk, and the AS appears. Now, remove the AS plus the card that is now at the back of the deck - this will show the AD. This is the AD/5D double backed card. Place these cards to one side.

You are now set to go again. This time the AC appears and is placed at the back of the deck. Then, the AH appears. Again, remove the front AH/AC and the back card, which is the AC/5D. The four Aces are now on the table, and you have just performed the most visual four-Ace trick re-appearance ever. You can ditch these cards and then carry on using the deck as a normal pack.

This trick is pure visual magic and the audience will gasp as the aces appear. The full explanation I did back in 1990 on my first, My Favorite Effects Teach-in here: https://youtu.be/PDXHD8rUAe4

ALL CLEAR CHAMPAGNE PREDICTION

Here’s something old and something new. Everything has been combined into a great entertaining routine that is not only baffling, but also very funny. This routine is the outcome of many trial and error attempts to come up with a funny yet different routine. None of the gags are new, and the force isn’t original, but then again many so-called ‘original’ effects these days are impractical and not entertaining. Furthermore, as a successful international old pro in the business, I believe I have stood the test of time and have developed a routine that has worked for over 25 years and is based on solid experience as a performer. It’s like comparing a university academic who has spent their whole life doing research, but has no real-life ‘in the job’ experience to someone that has actual both the academic background and a proven business record - there is a big difference between the two!

Over the years I have felt prey to the hype around new mentalism books and paid the high prices. Guess what? Out of 50 effects I maybe pull one idea and then I usually perform it using my own method. If you are a purist, you may disagree with my philosophy. However, purists don’t really make money - it’s the magicians who focus on the commercial market and perform for lay people that do! With that argument I rest my case and introduce what I believe to be one of the hallmark routines in this book. Did I mention that there is no skill and this routine is also easy to do?

You have an A3 size book on display with the word ‘Prediction’ written across cover. A spectator is called onto stage and shown a clear plastic bag containing a number of slips of paper, all of which have been folded into quarters. The spectator puts their hand into the bag, removes a number of these slips, unfolds them one at a time and confirms that different things are written on each slip. Once refolded they are returned to the bag, which is then shaken! The bag is now held behind the spectators back while she reinserts her hand removing ANY slip. Of course, the spectator is given the chance to change her mind and to select any other slip should she wish to do so. Now everything is brought to the front, but NOT unfolded as yet.

At this point a ‘Prediction’ book is picked up, and the spectator is asked whether or not she can
