About this ebook
I was taken on a health and spiritual journey I will never forget. Through a deep valley of struggles with my health, I had to learn to call on God to help me find a way through, even when it felt as though I was standing still.
Starting off as cold and grey, I soon discovered that the valley could be a place of revelation, refreshment and restoration, if I would let it. A place I could really be still, away from the busyness of life.
The instruction God gave me ' to write my way out of the valley' was the turning point in my perception of the valley and I started to look for the lessons God was teaching me in this place.
‘Revelations in the Valley’ is my personal experience expressed through a mix of autobiography, practical advice and spiritual revelations and offers hope to people going through their own trials, whatever they may be. It aims to help them discover the tools to get them through, all from a biblical and spiritual perspective.

Revelations in the Valley - sarah ninham
Preface
Trial. What do we think of when we see the word trial? Perhaps it stirs up thoughts of doom and gloom, a negative experience, unfair, unjust, why me? But can it be a positive experience? I challenge you that, yes, in fact, the trials we face can be a positive experience. It may not seem like it at the time but when we come through the trial and look back, we often see the spiritual, emotional and physical healing that took place. What is the Bible’s view on ‘the trial’? Do we feel shame, condemnation and bad about ourselves because we perceive that we have done something to bring about the trial? Those questions and issues will be looked at from a ‘God perspective’ in this book of my personal writing and reflections as I experienced ‘the trial’. Maybe you need spiritual healing, emotional healing, physical healing or psychological healing; whatever it may be, be encouraged through the words on printed page. I also pray that you will discover the breakthrough you need, whatever your trial may be.
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
(James 1:2-4, NKJV)
Introduction
Valley. What picture comes to mind? Somewhere deep and inaccessible that will take a huge effort/ climb to get out of? Somewhere dark, lonely, cold and grey? Yes, these can all be visions of a valley – but and a big BUT – can a valley be a warm place of safety, a place of renewing, restoring and refreshing?
It can be both, as I found out through the valley I found myself in. But I learned that it was my perception of the valley that determined my experience in the valley. Our minds are powerful, powerful machines that determine our thoughts, emotions, actions; which is why we need to guard our minds so carefully.
Everyone’s valleys will be different and we will experience different things/outcomes in our own valleys. Each valley is a deeply personal experience. But one thing is true; Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8, NKJV). He is with each of us in our valley. He will only make us walk with Him through the valley for as long as necessary, knowing each of our limits.
When I look back at ‘my valley’ and how it came about, I still find it hard to remember. Probably because I didn’t really want to remember; too painful, too depressing to focus on it and relive it. However, sometimes we need to remember what happened in our valley to see how far God has brought us and how He brought us through something and to remember that He was always there with us.
This is what this book aims to do; to help us through our trials and see God in them rather than keep questioning ‘the trials’. Then to rest, reflect and renew, coming out of the valley. This would become an important lesson for me in remembering how God brought me through and how He was always with me. He will never leave us in the valley; He will always walk with us and bring us through.
CHAPTER 1
Revelations In The Valley
The Valley
When I look back and think, ‘How did I get to be in the valley? When did that journey through that valley start?’ I think I was in it earlier than I thought.
I suppose it really started when I injured my back, over a year ago, in June 2015, chose to leave my job as a special needs teacher and went on the long journey of recovery. I had slipped and completely obliterated one disc in my lower back and the one above was bulging out and along with muscle wasting, my back was likened to a 65 year old’s and a ‘state’ by my specialist. I was 38 years old.
I didn’t realise back then just how long my recovery would take and what other trials I would face along the way. Just as well. When I look back I perceive that I had a positive approach to it all, and I did most of the time but also I can see how frustrated I was with it all, how frustrated with God I was, and with the whole situation in general really.
Little did I know that this was just the start of what unravelled into a downward spiral for my health.
As my back was recovering I felt God’s leading in going to India to visit a school and orphanage that we as a family support there. I felt it would be good to give something back to God, in my time waiting for healing. A song at the time by John Waller, ‘While I’m Waiting’ (2014), really spoke to me with the words ‘while I’m waiting I will serve you’. That was what was in my heart to do.
However, it materialised that while I was in India plans that I had didn’t happen and the trip ended up being a place and time of rest, refreshment and healing for me, as I was slowed down to a halt basically. I also found myself giving messages across the remote churches, and found that my experiences with my back and with what God had shown me and revealed through scripture through the previous four months or so became the focus of these messages. None of this was part of the plan; but remember, we are just vessels and God can use anyone – we just have to be willing and surrender our plans in favour of His, as they are always better.
Anyway, back to how the next trial came about or should I say, how the trial continued on. I had been home from India around ten days (end of November 2015) and was feeling pretty good up to that point, but then boom! I found myself in the emergency room. I had awoken during the night with chest pain, tingling arms, faintness, shaking and involuntary muscle spasms; so many strange symptoms that I really hadn’t a clue
