    Senior Shower

    Once a month, whether she needed it or not, Jaye took a shower. She had decided that if it were an acceptable policy for nursing homes, it was just fine for her too. At 50 plus years she was not as physically active as she was at 45. Her present stage of life was easy going. It was that time of month though. (She smiled at that thought.) Time for some excitement and a break from her many interests and community activities.

    Jaye and Jean had few friends. They quite liked it that way. No one to ask questions like, Why are your feet so dirty, When was the last time you did your hair? She would forgo that conversation. That was what her mental illness told her. She was convinced that she knew what people were going to say. It was seldom pleasant. So, rather than put up with critical minds, she would avoid them. Fight or flight, psychology 101.

    Jean appreciated Jaye’s quirks. Jean was a sweet and insightful soul with the heart of a teamster. She enjoyed Jaye. Jaye made her laugh and told some great stories. She told Jean that she was her muse. It was true. Jean liked to cook and drink her
