With a little help from her best friend, the freelancer Jezebel, Magdalene will take all the resources she needs and she will get what she wants in triplicate, no matter who she has to force into her servitude to do it.

Chapter 1
Conception
MAGDALENE WANTED A daughter.
The idea struck her a week ago, while she was making her exit from the bank she’d just robbed. It was a successful heist and she got out well before any of the heroes showed up, but the getaway hit a snag. Once they were off the main streets and free from chase, they cut through a suburb. A little girl ran out into the street that she had to swerve to miss, but that girl staring at her with her wide, innocent eyes planted the idea in her mind.
She let out a heavy sigh and brushed her long black hair back with her fingers. How do you make a daughter?
she asked herself, not for the first time.
Excuse me?
Jezebel’s voice brought her back to the bar. It smelled of smoke, blood and alcohol, but at least it wasn’t too crowded tonight. There were men and women in plain clothes, meeting for a drink before pulling their night shifts. Many of them were nursing fresh bruises from their run-ins with heroes, while a couple were noisy and cheery and buying a round at the bar while laughing over their exploits. It was mostly lackeys in the bar tonight, though in a few hours there would be bigger criminals looking to unwind.
Jezebel was across from her, bushy black hair falling around her shoulders. Mags, you don’t actually need me to explain how-
I know how babies work, Bel,
Magdalene laughed. I just...
Don’t want to be pregnant?
Jezebel smiled, draining her glass. I don’t blame you.
Hello ladies,
a smiling young man in his early twenties said, leaning on their corner table. Name’s Zephyr. Get you a refill?
Jezebel smiled and passed over her glass. Magdalene passed hers too and, in her sweetest voice, added, Don’t drug them.
Jezebel rolled her eyes as he left. He wasn’t going to do anything to them.
You can’t trust them.
You’re never going to get knocked up this way.
If you wanted to get knocked up, you could just say so,
Zephyr said, already back with their drinks. I happen to know a guy who would be very willing to help a lovely woman like yourself.
He smirked, raising a suggestive eyebrow as his eyes combed over her body.
Magdalene smiled and leaned in closer. She wove her fingers together, rested her chin on her hands, and smiled. Punch yourself in the face, would you?
Zephyr took his right hand and delivered a hard punch to his own face, knocking himself back and crashing into a table. Blood dribbled out of his nose. He stumbled as he tried to get back to his feet, confusion across his face. He looked imploringly back up to Magdalene.
Go away,
Magdalene said.
He got up and walked out of the bar, his friends staring after him. They glanced at Magdalene and quickly decided to not make eye contact, going back to their own business. No one went after him.
"You are really not going to get knocked up that way."
"I don’t want to get knocked up."
Then you aren’t getting a daughter.
There’s got to be another way around it.
What’s this really about, Mags?
Jezebel asked, leaning in and meeting her eyes. You don’t actually want kids now, do you? Other people that shit and are going to need you to wipe it up for them? Can’t feed themselves. Can’t walk on their own? Need you to be there every minute of every day?
I’m not as young as I used to be,
Magdalene said. And with Eve gone, who’s going to-
If Eve were still alive, she’d be giving you such shit right now. You used to give her such a hard time about wanting kids and now look at you.
Magdalene glared across the table, but Jezebel laughed.
We both know this has nothing to do with Eve,
she said. You’ve just hit the ‘Pass on the Legacy’ phase and you jumped right into creating little spawn. You probably saw a kid so cute it made your ovaries clench.
I-
But I know you’re not going to want to clean up someone else’s shit any more than I do. Why don’t you just take on a protégé? Some sidekick girl that you can teach all your secrets to and who can look over things when you aren’t around.
Jezebel looked around the room, eyes settling on one girl on the far side of the room. She was a petite blonde looking like she was trying to drown herself in her drink. One of the guys tried to approach, sliding slowly into the seat across from her. A dagger appeared in her hand an instant later. The girl threw it before they realized she had it.
How about that one?
Jezebel suggested. Daddy issues. Last boyfriend cheated on her. Doesn’t seem to have any problem with stabbing a guy. With a little coaching, it shouldn’t take that long to get her to see things your way. Plus, she looks like she’s pretty good with a knife.
Magdalene watched her as she went back to her drink. She looked sad as she stared into it. Upset and that was all. She would move past the heartache she was feeling now and the pain would fade once she found another man. There was no anger left in her now, no need for revenge that she could use.
I don’t think so.
There’s a hundred other girls like her out there. One of them is probably what you’re looking for.
Too old,
Magdalene said, shaking her head. I need someone younger. Someone whose mind isn’t already poisoned by the inane idea that men are not-
Yeah yeah, all men are scum and only fit to blah blah whatever.
Jezebel rolled her eyes and looked around for another option. "You could always just kidnap a kid. Find a girl who’s being abused by her single father, dead mother or something like that. Rescue her from a broken home and she’ll do whatever you tell her. Hell, tell her you’re her real mother anyway if
