About this ebook

The mute elven archer known only as Killer. Azyrin, a half Winter-orc shaman and his human swordswoman bride, Makha. Drake, the charming, swashbuckling rogue. The fireball-slinging pixie-goblin, Rahiel, and her mini-unicorn, Bill. These are the Gryphonpike Companions.

Arriving in Ramsport, Killer and her companions find a city under siege by a swarm of dragons. Banding together with other adventurers from their Guild, they set off to find the source of the swarm.

But as they sail down the Verdant Coast, Killer begins to suspect those around her are not as forthright they appear… and that soon dragons will be the least of her problems.

This is the fifth adventure novella in the Gryphonpike Chronicles series.

This book, along with the other stories in its series, does a very good job of establishing simple characters with more than one dimension, and the plot was neither convoluted nor predictable. No, this wasn't a megalithic Stephen King novel, but I think it was very effective and enjoyable nevertheless, and I'd give it 6 stars if I could!

About the Author

We all know this tale. There once was a beautiful elven princess who lived in a crystal forest in a hidden kingdom far beyond the common worlds. Her voice was unparalleled among the World-singers and her power brought her all she desired.

Until Wrath and Pride wound their way around her heart, turning songs of beauty and creation into songs of death and violence. For her crimes, she was cast out and cursed to live among the lesser creatures, among the elves and men who had forgotten those who sang into existence the earth they squabbled over. Her voice was stolen; her words taken like ember-waves melt footprints from the glowing sands.

Her banishment and silence will end when she has purged her crime by doing one thousand good deeds. So she joined with a rag-tag band of adventurers who call themselves the Gryphonpike Companions.

I am that foolish Singer. These are the chronicles of my path home.

Chapter 1

The dragons attacked our caravan at dusk. They had been lying in ambush, in the long grasses to the sides of the high road, letting the caravan slip into their midst before rising up, green and orange bodies lithe and terrifying in the dying sunlight. They weren’t large dragons, each about the size of a heavy hunting dog, but there were fifteen or twenty of them, a swarm we hadn’t seen coming.

How could we? Broodling dragons aren’t native to these shores. Broodlings were created in the laboratory of a mad wizard long ago, and exiled to the hot jungle isles far out in the fresh waters of the Argenae Sea. Most had died out, starved by lack of food on the islands. Apparently not all of them, however.

My companions and I had joined the caravan after leaving the town of Fallbarrow and making our way to the High Road. Though the merchants and caravan master weren’t expecting trouble this close to Ramsport, they were happy enough to share meals and wine with a group of adventurers in exchange for the added security of having our skills on their side.

We were mostly healed from our encounter with the undead armies of a Saliidruin Death Knight, but even so, we looked forward only to reaching the coast and doing easy work to pad our purses before lying low for the winter. It would be a lean winter for us, given our setbacks this year, what with undead armies, undead
