    About the Band

The band we know today as Blink-182 was first founded in Poway (a city in San Diego, California) way back in 1992 by Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Scott Raynor.

The group was originally called Blink - until they found out an Irish band with a small following had already started using the same name. They added the ‘182’ and the rest is history. There are various fan theories as to what relevance the number 182 has; one of the most popular is that it is said to be the number of times the ‘f’ word is said in the film Scarface. It is just as likely though that it was chosen because it just seemed like a number that fit!

In their first few years, the band gained a pretty solid following of fans who were attracted to the high-energy that was evident in both the music and the live performances. This, coupled with the boys’ irreverent style of humour meant that wider fame was only a matter of time.

Whilst most bands don’t like to be pigeon-holed into one particular style, it is fairly commonplace to apply a general label. In Blink-182’s case, the genre surely has to be classed as pop punk; the definition of this is the combination of the melodic and fast-paced rhythmic elements of traditional punk music with the lighter, bubblegum-fun leanings of the pop charts. Essentially, the music style is considered to be youthful but with an accessibility allowing it to be enjoyed by all ages.

Despite commercial success, time and time again reviewers have often dismissed Blink-182 as a ‘joke’ band. Their word-play and humour has often been criticised as ‘juvenile’, and with each new popular album release, certain elements of the music press seemed to become more and more resentful
