    DUSTIN,

    Yes, Mr. Flynn.

Would you please inform Miss Carter I’d like a briefing on the future releases we have slated for this quarter?

Yes, sir. Right away! Is there any special format you’d like for the material to be presented?

Jared paused in reply to Dustin’s question. When he’d carried out the request, an email update was all that he’d had in mind. Yet, Ava was in the office today and she’d looked deliciously perfect when he caught a flash of her lovely form in passing earlier. With the way they had things organized, seldom did they have to interact on an employer-to-subordinate level. So he’d be an idiot to not reap benefits of the tempting opportunity Dustin offered.

You know what? Now that you've asked Dustin, yes, I would prefer an in-person presentation. Have Miss Carter meet me in the conference room in, oh, say about thirty minutes.

The office was a packed house today, so there was a huge chance that the conference room wasn’t open.

It is available isn’t it, Dustin? Jared was confident that if the room weren’t available, his right-hand man would move hell and high water to make certain it would be within the following twenty minutes.

That’s not even a factor, Mr. Flynn. I’ll let Miss Carter know of the meeting and have the room prepared for you in thirty.

    Thank you, Dustin.

Not a problem, sir. That’s what I’m here for.

Jared swiveled around in his high-backed leather seat to look out the glass that comprised the complete back wall of his office. Seldom did he have a moment’s peace during the workday that allowed for him to sit back and bask in the fruits of his labor. Well, not just his labor, but also the labor of his cousin’s Jason and Jamal, who held a place nearer to him than a male sibling could ever have along with his little sister JaVaughn.

What started off as an undertaking between he and his blood; flourished and transformed into something bigger and grander than the four of them had ever conceived.

4-Way-Relations was a multimedia management organization with their hands in just about everything. From broadcast, periodical and book publishing, all the way to the independent film industry. Through the blood, sweat, and sobs of their sacrifice, 4-W-R made its imprint on the map as one of the best multimedia businesses and public relations companies in the state!

Little had Jared known that, when he’d first cast eyes on Ava while he’d been attending one of the multiple bachelor gatherings for Jamal, this one in particular having taken place at the strip club, was that he was also gazing at a highly-accomplished author and best-selling novelist. The quantity of skill that Ava possessed was unbelievable! After having severed relations with her publishing company, Random House Publishing, Ava signed on with 4-Way-Relations. She’d also become the headhunter for writers on behalf of their publishing group.

Working side-by-side with JaVaughn, the two somehow managed, very much to Jared’s amazement, to grow that line to the level of effectiveness where it approached the amount of business 4-Way pulled in through the public relations side of things. One stipulation his bold, independent, soon-to-be better half demanded, before assenting to join 4-W-R, was that she wouldn’t be right underneath Jared. Her winning argument had been that if he wished to have her beneath him at home, she couldn’t be expected to report to him in the office.

    The decision was his.

Although he’d objected to the stipulation Ava placed on the offer acceptance, Jared entirely understood where she was coming from.

    He’d also appreciated it.

    Albeit silently.

He’d known telling her of the fantasies he’d conjured with her as his personal assistant would reach back to bite him in the ass one day. Part of the rationale, well the bulk of it, behind Ava parting ways with her old publishing firm had been because of an indifferent relationship she’d been caught up in with her editor. That casual relationship had, in short order, migrated southward. Just the image of Phillip Barnes had Jared gnashing his teeth and balling his hands into fists as he relived how it had felt as they’d struck and beat against the piece of shit’s face.

What a difference eight months made. He was now happy, content, and engaged to the love of his life. Everything he held dear, consistently within the scope of his fingertips.

Head bowed as he glanced down at his polished and trim manicured hands, Jared noticed the time on the face of his Invicta, anticipating Ava’s rainfall that would soon wash over them in entirety. A Cheshire cat grin widened across Jared’s face as he played out all the desirable reactions Ava Laine would have when he propositioned her during their meeting.

With her acting all high and mighty and being adamant over needing to carry on a professional relationship while at the office, Jared hadn’t encountered nearly, well, any of the amount of morning and afternoon delights he'd been positive they’d share once Ava signed on. Anytime she felt convicted about something she could be a difficult little nut to crack.

Unfortunately for Jared, Ava seemed absolute about remaining professional at all hours while inside the offices of 4-W-R. But, what was the purpose of being the chief if you couldn’t influence your employees...to your will? This, after all, is what allowed him to receive the maximum skills that his sexy-as-hell, beautiful fiancé offered.

LIFTING HER PIPING hot coffee to her lips, Ava blew ever so gently across the top of her jumbo-sized cup as she browsed through her numerous emails from clients and the potentials who aspired to become prospective clients of 4-Way-Relations. Shaking her head in secrecy, sometimes Ava still found herself reluctant to believe and unable to accept that she, herself was, in reality, a noted author on 4-Way-Relations roster.

She wasn't just a signed author, but a headhunter for the group as well. How crazy was that? Ava never ceased scouring new book releases for the next bestselling 4-W-R author. Whenever she wasn’t immersed in the world of her own novels or faced with reality, Ava always had her nose buried deep inside the virtual pages of her Paperwhite Kindle.

On occasion, she would have to come up with ways to distract Jared with something other than herself, like a sports game or program on television. Doing so ensured she'd have peace for an hour or so. And if she was really desperate and at her wits end for some quality reading time, we’re talking nothing less than four hours at least, Ava would call Nannie.

She’d innocently inquire what Jared’s elderly spitfire of a grandmother needed done and or seen to around the house. When she’d first employed this tactic of obtaining the uninterrupted time required to surrender and submerge herself inside whatever fictional universe awaited her, Nannie would help out and save the day.

    No questions asked.

Nowadays, that old virago held out until Ava caved and read to her whatever steamy scene she was writing at said time. Then, and only then, would Nannie cooperate and miraculously turn up with a laundry list of necessary tasks that required immediate attention.

A loud cackle slipped through her pursed and grinning lips as she recalled the state Jared came home in last weekend after he’d cleaned Nannie’s fireplace. If you believed what he said, That chimney has never been cleaned out in the eighty-something odd years that the old battle-axe has been in existence!

The clothing he’d worn that day had been completely ruined...down to his socks and underwear.

Ava had barely been able to restrain her laughter and maintain her composure at the sight of him but succeeded in order to keep from being the object of his revenge.

As it stood today, Jared had intentions of getting even with Jamal and Jason, who’d both been conveniently and suspiciously missing in action last weekend. The last thing Ava needed was to be included on that list.

When the Wright family got it into their skulls that payback was warranted... you better watch out. Nothing prevented them from seeking retaliation and getting their retribution.

    Nothing!

Not even...a fresh wash and blow-dry, courtesy of the Dominican Salon, could stand in their way, as she herself had witnessed first-hand when the boys set it up to drench JaVaughn from head to toe the moment she stepped inside their house. Fresh and clean, having just come from the Dominican hair salon. After having sat in the salon for over two and a half hours.

Ava had to go to Jesus for strength that day. Not just to calm down JaVaughn, but she had also needed the strength of God to hold her back. Ava kicked the laughing hyena men out before bodily harm could be done to them in the heat of the moment. The kind of harm that prevented men from siring babies, harm.

Secretly, Ava was tempted to turn JaVaughn loose and have a go at them.

What they’d done was just low. The lowest of the low. Something you simply did not do to a woman and expect not to lose a testicle or two.

They’d gone to Jamal’s place to seek refuge, but after Keisha heard what they’d done, she’d promptly cussed the three stooges out like she was a sailor employed on the docks in the eighteenth century!

Keisha schooled them on what their childish actions had done, specifically to a sista who didn’t have the luxury or the ability to just air dry and go. To say the three stooges were currently living in fear was putting it mildly.

JaVaughn, however, was enjoying their unease a little too much to relieve them of their misery. Retribution hadn't been served up yet, but Ava was certain revenge was on the way. Or at least in the works, only to be served the moment they let down their guards and became too comfortable.

Right when they least expected it.

    Miss Carter.

Yes, Dustin. How may I help you?

Mr. Flynn would like for you to meet him in the conference room fifteen minutes after the hour to discuss next quarter’s new release lineup.

Casting a quick glimpse at her clock, Ava confirmed the meet time only gave her fifteen minutes to prepare everything. Short notice much?!

For the most part, Jared was fine with her sending information to him and the others via email. In effect, the more she thought about it, Ava found it somewhat peculiar he was scheduling a meeting to discuss it at all.

Okay. Let him know I’ll be to his office shortly.

Actually, Miss Carter, Mr. Flynn has requested for you to meet him in the conference room.

If Ava’s intuition wasn't piqued and on high alert before, it most certainly was now. They never met in the conference room alone. Ever!

Just what do you think you have up your sleeve, Mr. Flynn?

Okay. I’ll be to the conference room in a bit.

It only took Ava five minutes to gather the data she needed onto her thumb drive and throw her notes together. She knew Jared had something, in addition to this meeting, under his...belt. What fun would it be if she didn’t have something up her skirt, or missing preferably?

    Chapter Two

WHEN AVA ENTERED THE conference room, Jared was already present and seated at the head of the table. The last thing Ava wanted to do was affirm for her cocky man that she, in fact, had spent the better part of her morning lusting after him.

She couldn’t help it! Lord, he’d looked magically delicious this morning in his grey button down suit and green handkerchief accentuating his light and slightly clouded eyes. Jared’s broad chest stretched the fabric and threads of his suit as it fought to keep the deliciously hard muscled specimen contained.

    Good afternoon, Miss Carter.

Jared decided to break the silence, issuing the greeting after a couple of minutes had passed without Ava uttering a word or making a sound. He’d be rectifying her speechlessness very shortly. She would soon be fighting the good gift to be quiet. Leaning his head to the side, Jared succeeded in obtaining a better view of her long and shapely legs.

    Very soon.

Good afternoon, Mr. Flynn. Ava spoke politely, returning his cool and Jiffy peanut butter-smooth greeting. Raising her brow at his relaxed posture, Ava continued, I do believe you’re sitting in my seat, Mr. Flynn. Unless you aren’t, in fact, wanting to see the headlines for next month’s releases.

Rising stealthily from his seat, Jared
