    The cool breeze on a warm summer evening should have felt pleasant. Harold knew that. June had been especially warm that year in his little suburb outside Portland, Oregon. After a full day of arguing with his salesmen the breeze should have lifted his spirits. Carried the pleasant scent of Douglas firs to his nose, and let him forget about car sales and quotas for just one evening.

    He could hear the sounds of people in the background. A neighbor watching a game show with answer-shouting enthusiasm. Cars winding their way toward homes, and slamming their doors when they arrived. Distant honks of the impatient, not getting home fast enough.

    Normal sounds. People sounds. Safe sounds.

    But the sun was down now. Harold had watched it set behind the huge, green-and-brown apartment complex across the street from where he sat in his wooden deck chair on the small front porch of his two-story house.

    Time to finish his microbrew and go inside. Heat up some pre-cooked salmon and steam some vegetables in the microwave.
