      Chad

      A thick silence followed my announcement that I was pregnant. Robert’s mouth fell open, but he didn’t say anything for a few seconds.

      I cleared my throat. Like I said, I wasn’t going to tell you. I was just going to get rid of the baby and move on with my life.

      You’re pregnant? When he finally spoke, his eyes were wide and his voice hushed.

      I nodded, looking around nervously. Don’t worry. I don’t want a baby any more than you do.

      He dropped his gaze to the table top. Shit.

      My face warmed. I know.

      Glancing up, he still looked shocked. Wow.

      It was a shock to me too.

      He narrowed his gaze. Why are you only telling me this now?

      I sighed. I had you pegged as a jerk. But tonight, you seemed different. Softer. When he’d offered to help me stack the flour and sugar, it had been a surprise. I’d already agreed to go to dinner with him, so that gesture had simply been out of the goodness of his heart. Plus, the way his voice warmed whenever he spoke of his brother, Tom, had me recognizing maybe I’d jumped to conclusions about him. He obviously wasn’t an unfeeling asshole.

      He still looked rattled. I’ve never gotten anyone pregnant. To be honest, I thought maybe I couldn’t.

      I chuffed. Well, you thought wrong.

      Have you seen a doctor?

      I shook my head. Not yet. I took a home pregnancy test. Well two to be honest. I’d been shocked at the positive result. I’d known when the condom broke there was a possibility I could get pregnant, but I hadn’t really thought it would happen. Then I’d started throwing up every morning and feared the worst.

      Stella set our food in front of us and thankfully didn’t seem to notice the awkwardness at the table. Once she’d left us again, Robert shifted to face me.

      You were just going to abort the baby and not even tell me? His eyes flashed with irritation. Why?

      I shrugged. We didn’t exactly have a love connection. It was supposed to be a one-time thing, remember?

      Yeah, but-

      Are you seriously trying to pretend you’d have been thrilled if I’d called you and announced I was knocked up?

      He grimaced. It’s not something I was seeking. He frowned. But now that it’s happened…

      I widened my eyes. I’m not keeping it.

      That ‘it’ is our child.

      I leaned toward him. I can’t be pregnant and do my job. It’s almost killed me now, and that was before I was pregnant.

      He swallowed hard. I’ll help you.

      I laughed. How?

      He blinked at me. I have money and free time. I can definitely help you.

      You don’t know the first thing about my business. I scowled. Was he joking? He’d probably be more of a hindrance than a help.

      I can hire people that do. That’s the one perk of being wealthy. He looked completely serious.
