About this ebook

The ascent of Nanga Parbat in 1970 marked the beginning of Reinhold Messner's remarkable career in Himalayan climbing. But this expedition has always been shrouded in controversy and mystery; his brother Gunther, who accompanied him, met his death on the mountain. In The Naked Mountain Messner gives his side of the story in full for the first time. This most personal account is a story of death and survival and for those who want to understand what is the force that drives Messner on, this book is the key. 'Nothing if not passionate, Messner writes of the Himalyan experience with a nearly mystical fervour. His description of catastrophe at high altitude is page-turning' Rock & Ice. 'A gripping piece of writing ...the translation reads like a good thriller, drawing the reader back through historical epics; treading the footsteps of climbers right on the edge of things' Scottish Mountaineer.

This was a very interesting account of the June 1970 climb of Nanga Parbat aka Naked Mountain. Reinhold Messener nearly doesmt make it off the mountain himself and his younger brother is killed. There is a lot of controversy after the disaster. This book shows the other side of the controversy combining papers and journal entries from members of the expedition. While I myself am not into mountain climbing, I thought the account was interesting. There are a lot of very beautiful pictures throughout the book to bring it to life. In fact, I think the pictures may have made the book in my view. The wording in the translation may have lost something and could be a little dry in places. But the pictures brought the story to life. If you are interested in true adventure stories and enjoy beautiful pictures, this book is a good choice for you. Large type, and lots of pictures. Easy reading and a fascinating account of Nanga Parbat where Messner lost his brother at the end of an grueling descension.Pity though the story feels like an unfinished one. Probably so we will buy the other book he has written about this adventure.
