About this ebook

The third Lew Griffin novel

In a time of anger, activism, and bitter racial tensions, a sniper has appeared to heat up an already sweltering New Orleans summer - by tearing up innocent people like paper targets. The shooter's sixth fatality is cut down while she is walking at Lew Griffin's side. The victim was white. Griffin is black - a reluctant young PI whose poet's heart has already been hardened by amoral injustice and heavy drink. And though he had only just met his unfortunate companion, Griffin knows it's up to him to find her killer - before a madman puts the final match to a volatile urban tinderbox.

'He's right up there, one of the best of the best. His series of novels about private eye Lew Griffin is thoughtful, challenging and beautifully written' - Iain Sinclair, Guardian

'James Sallis is a superb writer' - The Times

Don't miss the other novels in the Lew Griffin series: The Long Legged Fly, Moth, Black Hornet, Eye of the Cricket, Bluebottle and Ghost of a Flea.

Set in New Orleans, 1968, Lew Griffin is a big guy who does some body guarding, some debt collecting. He has a reputation for being tough when he needs to be, but also for being a little weird. When the white woman Lew is walking down the street with is shot by a sniper, Lew's first thought is that someone didn't like seeing her with a black man. The police first believe that Lew must have been involved, but when he meets a policeman on the same track, both looking for a military trained professional, they join up to chase the killer through the city.Noir-ish, with a background of racial tension. A solid story, though the author tends to get a little pretentious here and there.
