    CHAPTER 1

Croc hollered, Yippee Ki-Yay, as he took off his bush hat and wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand.

The couple next to us exited their Mercedes-Benz convertible and stared at Croc with an odd look on their face, like Croc was some weirdo. If you didn’t know Croc beforehand, he does take some time getting used to. He can be a bit brazen at times.

Croc announced, Let’s get goin’! The water taxi leaves in ten. Croc was all excited for the adventure on which we were about to embark.

Croc, Ashley, Ethan, and I were approximately fifteen miles Southwest of Tropical Cove in a small beach town called Jewels, Florida. We were headed for a day trip to Emerald Isle. It was only five minutes away and was a popular tourist destination for day trips, and even overnight stays, which had beautiful villas overlooking the Gulf and a five star restaurant. The neat part about Emerald Isle is that it was only accessible by boats, ferryboats, water taxis, and helicopters.

We were going for a day trip to Emerald Isle as a celebration for Ashley, who was recently crowned Ms. Tropical Cove. Ashley was dressed casually but still looked beautiful. She was wearing light-brown capris and a light-purple, fashionable tank shirt that said Tropical Cove and had a coconut palm embroidered on the front. She wore a black pair of comfortable-looking, slip-on Croc sandals. Ashley’s cute, short bob framed her face nicely and her diamond tiara sat lovely upon her head. One of Ashley’s duties was to promote Tropical Cove when she was out and about, and act in an upright manner.

Hey, Ashley! There’s a little something on your arm, some dirt or something.

Where, Mads? Lately, Ashley has enjoyed calling me Mads for short, instead of Maddie. I don’t disapprove; I think it is rather cute!

Croc pointed at a little spot on her upper arm and flicked at it while saying, Right there, Ash.

Ashley pointed and looked at her arm. Oh, that guys. That’s just where ma nicotine patch was. I didn’t think that smokin’ was proper for a beauty queen anymore. If I’m supposed to be representin’ Tropical Cove, I should stop that filthy habit. If ya know what I mean.

Croc looked at Ashley and said, Wow, Ash. That’s smokin’!

Ashley gave Croc a light sucker punch on his bicep. Ouch! He replied jokingly.

Ashley giggled and said, You’re such a sissy!

Croc put his arm around her shoulder almost knocking her tiara off and gave her a slight squeeze. They were like two peas in a pod.

As I rubbed sun lotion on my face and arms, I asked, How’s it going, Ashley?

You mean me and Croc? Just kiddin’. Got’s ya, Mads! ‘LOL’. Quittin’ smokin’ has been the hardest thing. It’s really difficult at times but I try ta distract myself or chew on some gum. Ashley opened her purse and showed us a boatload of Wringley’s Doublemint. Here purse was filled to the rim with gum that even her clasp on her purse didn’t shut anymore.

Croc said, I guess we all know where ta go for gum, now don’t we? Croc took a pack out of Ashley’s purse and passed a stick of gum around to everyone.

I took the gum out of its wrapper and started chewing on it and expressed, My favorite chewing gum is Wringley’s Juicy Fruit.

Ethan piped up. The first we’ve heard him say anything all morning. So is mine, Maddie.

I gave Ethan a warm smile; he returned the gesture. My heart did a few flip-flops. I continued to watch Ethan out of the corner of my eye as he chewed his gum. Gawd, he’s so cute! I thought to myself.

Croc looked at Ethan and grinned like a Cheshire cat, Cat got your tongue, boy? It’s the first I heard ya speak all day.

Leave him alone, Croc. He’s busy contemplating. Ethan’s wounds were still healing over the arrest of his ex-girlfriend, Jessica. I glanced over at Ethan with a sympathetic look and said,  Only time will heal a broken heart.

Ethan didn’t hear me as he was so deep in thought while he
