Blood on the Line by Edward Marston
#8 in the Railway Detective / Inspector Robert Colbeck Series
    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

    My View
I have now read the first eight books in this series and this would have to rank up there amongst my favourites in this series so far. I do really like this series and there has not been one book I have not enjoyed. This is not a blood and guts series, but I do love the interplay between the main characters - Inspector Robert Colbeck, Sergeant Leeming, and the head of the newly formed Police Force at Scotland Yard, Inspector Tallis. All three are such contrasting characters but in your own way you have to love them all. In this book we learn a lot more about Inspector Colbeck, his part and why he gave up a lucrative career as a barrister to become a policeman, as well as about a past love interest. This also explains why he is so reluctant at this stage to marry his fiancé. This book has a bit of everything - a chase, deaths, guilt, evil criminals, retribution, etc... In fact so much so that we almost lose one of the main characters, but I'll leave you to find out what I mean by this. If there was a relative weak point in this one it would be that Madeline has a more minor role than in previous books. - I missed her and Robert together!
If you have not read any of this series I strongly urge you to try them, they are quick, light easy reads and I do love the part that the early days of the Railways plays in these books, but then again I have always been fascinated by the early days of the railways!
Onward to Book 9 - he needs to write faster!

This didn't have much going for it. Set in the early days of railway travel it tried to be golden age but had modern violence and unpleasant characters.

The story was brutal as was the murders & murderers.... The continual whining of Constable Leeming, bullying of Superintendent Tallis, & blustering of Caleb Andrews just was on my last nerve... Seriously such unlikable men had me skipping over parts where they were featured....Inspector Colbeck has been after Jerry Oxley for many years, ever since Oxley abducted, tortured and murdered a witness to a robbery/murder he had committed.... The young woman & Colbeck were beginning to care for each other, when she was abducted by Oxley and Colbeck has never been able to let it go.Oxley is finally in captivity and bound for London on a train, when a young woman desperately runs to catch the train, hops aboard as it is leaving the station and settles in the same compartment as the two policemen & Oxley.... As it turns out, Irene is Oxley's accomplice. She draws a gun and shoots one officer point blank between the eyes, while Oxley beats the other senseless with the gun. While in the tunnel, both police officers are thrown off the train and are sliced to fragments by another train....Oxley & Irene run to ground, but Oxley has come up with a way to rid himself of Inspector Colbeck: he writes Colbeck a letter (which is intercepted by Superintendent Tallis) offering to meet face to face with the intention of murdering Colbeck. Stupidly Tallis, decides that he wants the glory of arresting Oxley, so he takes a young officer dressed as Colbeck with him to meet Oxley.... Oxley draws a gun and kills the young policeman. In a state of self-pity and distaste, Tallis resigns, but Colbeck convinces him to come back (where is even more of a gormless prat)Inspector is on Oxley's trail, whereupon he stumbles upon Oxley's friends (with whom he & Irene had been staying) who are also wanted for murder.....Oxley & Irene then decide to sail for "America", as Mr. & Mrs. Colbeck (which tips Colbeck off) and Colbeck & Leeming taking a faster ship arrive before the pair and begin working w/ the NYCPD...The violence & brutality put me off....

Colbeck is on the trail of a vicious killer and his female accomplice and is lead a merry dance around the country, giving him the chance to explore several railway routes courtesy of Bradshaw! Undemanding story telling.

This is the eighth novel in the Railway Detective series set in the mid 19th century. Somewhat to my surprise, this has actually been my favourite of the series so far. This one concerned a Bonny and Clyde type couple on the run after they brutally kill two policemen so that the man, Jeremy Oxley, can escape custody. They are clever and cunning and elude their pursuers for a long time, but our heroes Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming of course close in on them eventually after a dramatic chase across the Atlantic and a stand off in New York. Colbeck's superior Inspector Tallis comes across as more human and rounded here too, as a mistake he makes costs the life of one of his men at the hands of the killers, and causes him to question, at least temporarily, his role and approach. I really enjoyed this story and the recurring characters' ongoing traits that I initially found annoying I now find rather endearing. At the end it also looks like Colbeck may at last marry his sweetheart Madeleine Andrews. There will be a shorter gap before I read book 9.

Edward Marston just can’t write a book that is anything but interesting…entertaining...factual of the era… and isn’t just impossible to put down. The only thing I found rather off putting about this book... and that I have seen developing throughout from the first... is that one of the characters is becoming hard to tolerate. Sergeant Leeming needs to grow up… see a shrink…read the help wanted ads…or something. His constant complaining about being away from his family is belittling and redundant. Okay…he misses them…I get it…but did he miss this part of the job description? On the plus side the information about the railroad system in that slower era was fascinating and the chase for Jeremy Oxley was brilliant. Looking forward to the next adventure with Inspector Robert Colbeck.
