Decent. Surprisingly so. I'm a big fan of the Dragon Age games and I also read David Gaider's previous DA books -- even though I thought the first book was stronger than the second one.Well, Asunder is probably better than both. You can tell Gaider really took his time with this; the story is well told and the characters fleshed out and more complex than expected. New faces are introduced, while some old ones return, which made this book all the more enjoyable for me.

This was a lot easier to read than Mr. Gaider's previous two books - he does not get bogged down in descriptions here (in previous two books of the series, for example, a fight went on and on and on...for pages and pages... good for some people, not for me). That said, the topic, mages vs templars (again) is not my favourite in the Dragon Age universe, but this ties in nicely with Dragon Age 2. It takes place after that game ends. There are a few cameos in here, and a large role played by Wynne and Shale that fans will enjoy, I think. But, you have to be a Dragon Age fan to read this, otherwise I could see confusion on your face. It was a great read overall.

Asunder is the backstory of Cole, Rhys, and Evangeline, characters from the game of DA: Inquisition. It also involves Wynne and Shale from DA: Origins as Wynne is Rhys's mother. It involves the mage rebellion against the Templars pre-Inquisition. Rhys is a mage and Evangeline a Templar who unite to find a killer in the White Spire, the home of the mages in Orlais. Meanwhile, Rhys has befriended Cole, a young man/spirit haunting the lower reaches of the White Spire. When Rhys is the one accused of the murders, Wynne shows up to help her son.I love these characters, and it was great to get this backstory for them. Rhys and Evangeline aren't actually in the game but are referred to by Cole several times, and I've always wondered about them. And Wynne is a favorite party member for me. Mr. Gaider is a wonderful fantasy writer and he's woven a story that stands on its own even if you haven't played the games.
