About this ebook

Former Hollywood party girl Nikki Ashburne sees ghosts—in fact, many of them are her friends. Okay, they’re kind of her only friends.

So when the ghost of a 70s British rock god asks her for help finding a song he wrote for his favorite groupie…well, c’mon. What’s a girl to do but say yes?

Only one problem: Nikki’s rift with her musician brother, Ned, over the spectral secret she’s been keeping from him…

Another story in the popular Ghosted urban fantasy series featuring Nikki Ashburne. Come for the ghosts. Stay for the snark.

    Communication Breakdown

    A Nikki Ashburne/Ghosted Short Story

The morning sun was finally over the scrubby brown Malibu hills, sparkling on the Pacific waves. When my younger brother, Ned, and I had arrived, dawn had barely been pinking. It would be another hot Southern California day, but for now I was deeply content. My face was tight with dried seawater, my hair plastered to my head, and my lips tasted of salt. My muscles ached pleasantly from the workout, and I had the sand between my toes and the soft wind caressing my skin.

    The surfing had been glorious.

One of the best parts of driving through Malibu in the summer was all the hot surfer dudes changing out of their wetsuits on the shoulder of Highway 1. You couldn’t really complain about the traffic because it slowed you down for the view. There are no ugly surfers. Trust me on this.

Ned had already carried his board to his car and was stripping down up there, no doubt to the delight of passers-by. My own suit was half off, dangling around my waist and my modest, copper-colored one-piece Speedo. I’d come here to surf, not lounge in this season’s latest fashion of a bikini.

Since it was a weekday morning, we hadn’t had a lot of company. Now, the only other surfer who’d been on the waves with us carried his board near me and dug it into the sand so it stayed upright. He was humming a song I couldn’t quite place, something older, classic.

Great waves today, I said by way
