About the Publisher
Never in his long-tenured career had Detective John Martinez seen such savagery. In this up-scaled neighborhood, things like this didn’t happen. A vigilant neighbor saw the front door of his friend’s home open and unattended. A feeling in his gut urged him to stop by and check out the situation. He never imagined the horrors which awaited him inside. Crying and incoherent, he managed to describe to the 911 dispatcher what he’d seen. When officers arrived, they discovered reddish shoe prints that led away from the front door and to the street. With the volume on the television blasting, they found some of the Spencer family positioned on the couch. During an extensive search of the home, detectives found the rest of the Spencer family; piece by piece.
Blood stained the walls of the English Townhome. One severed arm and two left hands chilled in the refrigerator. A couple of ears and a tongue sat in the kitchen cabinet. A right foot was found in the microwave. Three officers departed the home to vomit in the bushes. With no witnesses and zero fingerprints, the case inevitably turned cold after several years. No one who lived in the neighborhood would ever have another peaceful night’s sleep. It was just another unsolved mystery. It was just another killer still on the loose.
Harold Wallace stumbled into the kitchen to put on a pot of coffee. He always took it black; no cream and no sugar. He cursed as he stepped on something slippery. Fog in his head didn’t allow him to focus on the Teen Vogue magazines he’d later blame Becca for leaving on the floor. She was not a slob by any means; far from it. Harold was responsible for knocking the magazines off of the coffee table, but he had no memory of last night. He blamed his freckled, fair-skinned daughter for the mishap. This was not uncommon. If Harold let a gunman in the house, he would blame Becca for allowing him to open the door. An outsider might think she was the wise old parent.
Harold was never going to be a candidate for father of the year. There was a time in fourteen year old Becca’s life when she wouldn’t have agreed. Having lost her mother to cancer three years prior, she depended on Harold for food and a roof over her head. Soon, she would be old enough to work and make money. On a calendar which hung in her room, Becca counted down the days until her birthday. It would be one birthday closer to the day when saving for her place would become reality. Right now, food and housing was reality. It was the only gift she received from her emotionally absent father. He was an alcoholic part-time construction worker with no motivation. He possessed no patience for anyone else’s problems. He had his own to worry about.
Becca sat in her bedroom staring at chipped pink paint on the walls. Her friends were at the mall catching a movie while enjoying popcorn and raisinets. They were probably laughing at one of Sarah’s lame jokes, but they were only being nice. Sarah didn’t have a
