About this ebook

Iivali is one of many Kuaffa, an otherworldly species born from the stars. However, their lives are terribly short. Their goal? To travel to the outer reaches of the galaxy so their lives can end in fervor. But the journey is not so easy.

Human Hunters scour the galaxy in search of the Kuaffa, driving the starborn creatures to near-extinction. However, one Hunter puts his life on the line in order to save what remains of them.

When the two meet, what follows is the beginning of a journey with revelations that will rock the galaxy—and everything that exists within it—to its core.

    Astral Threads - Samantha Ricks

Far past the skies, a small ship hovered above a planet. A creature with deerlike features leaned over the console. His velvet-soft ears twitched as he scanned the screen. Bright orange eyes relaxed when he saw five streaks of light race across the galaxy. When they disappeared, his three-fingered hand went to his chest, where he felt warmth from his own heart.

Everything went well, he mused. They all transformed into star bursts with no problems whatsoever. His eyes scanned the screen. This time, they were able to escape the Hunters thanks to a false trail they sent out. When it’s time for my life’s journey to end, I must be more careful—I’m not as experienced as them.

The creature turned away from the holographic screen, rubbing his forehead. I’ll head to a Station to refuel. He calculated the distance from his current location to the Station, and pulled the steering column. The small ship sped off amidst the glow of cosmic bodies around him, and disappeared in a flash.

The large one-floor building rested comfortably among the mountain range. Shouts littered the calm atmosphere, threatening to rip it to shreds. Machines guided Kuaffa along a singular path into the building, each one connected by chains that ran from their handcuffs. Robotic guards were on a four-wheeled base, with tranquilizing launchers that rested under the large eye of their cameras.

If the Kuaffa resisted capture, they would be bound by rope and dragged along the icy terrain.

Hurry up!! A gruff voice slashed through the howling winds. He led the group closer to the looming building with each step, then pulled open the iron doors with a grunt. The hinges screamed. Bone-chilling temps collapsed at the door. The Kuaffa strode in; they all saw a lone figure at the top of a bridged walkway.

Dressed in layer upon layer of clothing, he stood there with a pleased expression on his face. He was flanked by a few guards; a woman stood next to him, dressed in long overalls and a sweater. Around her shoulders was a cloak made from the fur of fallen Kuaffa, and around her neck was a necklace with a reddish-pink jewel. Commence the salute to our leader, Archem Forensky! she yelled. The guards around the Kuaffa all stopped to face Forensky, their backs rigid. With a collective shout, they did so, and Forensky only chuckled in response.

As the guards made their way inside with their fresh catch, Forensky tapped the woman’s shoulder and leaned in to whisper. Make sure they yield more than the last group. We need to double our profit.

    The woman nodded. Understood.

A group of Hunters hovered above the planet’s atmosphere. They kept in touch via an intraship communication network; speakers installed above the control panel made chatting with others within the network stress-free. If one wanted to contact another personally, they needed to enter a five digit code. Conversations drifted from one topic to the next. It was a sign of boredom, of a lack of prey.

So, when do you think the next few will cross paths with us? one asked. It’s been a while since the last capture, and if we don’t come up with anything soon, Forensky won’t be happy.

Another Hunter snorted over the speaker. "Doesn’t Forensky realize that most of them
