Faith Journeys - Denise Neale Gordon

    INTRODUCING FAITH JOURNEYS

    THE JOURNEY IS THE DESTINATION

"We Walk By Faith and Not By Sight."

    (2 Corinthians 5:7)

Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time."

    Oswald Chambers

Lord, I would give up all this to help the homeless poor on the streets of Bristol, I said with tears streaming down my face. I was reading, All Things Are Possible, a book written by Arthur T. Pierson about George Müller. Müller was a Christian evangelist and founder and director of the Ashley Down Orphanages in Bristol, Great Britain, who cared for over 10,000 orphans in his lifetime.

His story inspired, challenged and confirmed what God had started doing in my heart a few years before. My deepest heart’s desire was to develop an even deeper, more intimate, relationship with God – to live by faith and trust God more in every area of my life. George Müller had a deep trust in God and His Word. He knew that whatever he needed, the hand of God would provide. I was loving all I was learning, especially about praying the Word of God.

This book awakened something God had placed in my heart as a child. Whenever I saw empty buildings, I would pray and ask God to give me money so that I could fix them up and let homeless people live in them. I was child and just believed that I could pray that way. I must admit, I don’t remember ever seeing homeless people in Birmingham, England, where I lived. I believe God had placed that desire and call in my heart to help people in that situation.

2001 was a life changing year for me. Besides reading about George Müller, I also read the life stories of James Hudson Taylor and Rees Howells.

James Hudson Taylor was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China. He started working as a medical assistant, but began preparing himself for a life of faith and service to God. He devoted himself to the poor and exercised his faith, believing that God would provide for his needs, which He did many times, and in the most unusual ways. Knowing that God could be trusted to provide for him, Hudson Taylor left Britain for China with hardly anything but his faith in God. He became the founder of the China Inland Mission (CIM) (now OMF International). He spent 51 years in China and was responsible for bringing over 800 missionaries to the country, who began 125 schools, resulting in around 18,000 people being converted to Christianity. Hudson’s most famous words, which he constantly repeated to others, were Depend upon it. God’s work, done in God’s way, will never lack for supplies.

Rees Howells was a man of prayer and faith. He was led totally by the Holy Spirit in every aspect of his life, and as a result did some unusual, life-challenging things. He was led by God to open a Bible College in Britain, to teach the principles of faith and intercession he had learnt. It was to be founded and sustained by prayer and faith alone. With just ten pence (fifteen US cents) in hand, Rees and his helpers believed God for the equivalent of millions of pounds in today’s money to begin and sustain the work. He dedicated his life to God’s cause, an example to us all of what can be achieved by prayer and faith alone. He taught that it is safe to trust God’s Word and His promises.

Having read these books, I wanted to experience what these men of faith had experienced with God. I wanted my relationship with God to be a relationship of total trust – believing Him to provide all that we needed, and to see the miracles He could do in our lives. I was very hungry for God and I wanted more. The book you are reading now is all about our journey for more.

Hudson Taylor, Rees Howells and George Müller were my mentors in faith. I read their books with a deep and lasting hunger. I had to have what they had!

I was an Ordained Minister in the Methodist Church at the time of reading these books. Around September 2001, I was ready to leave the Methodist Church, the Manse, our furniture, our car – everything that made up the whole of our comfortable life – in order to live by complete faith, trusting in God, to help the homeless poor on the streets of Bristol.

Faith Journeys is about my husband, Herman, and I being called by God to take the biggest step of faith in our lives to date: out of the comfort zone of the life we were living, to take hold of the hand of God in the name of Jesus. To be led by the Holy Spirit who would teach us how to completely trust God to provide, …all our need according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19 paraphrased).

We all know that every journey has a beginning, middle and an end. This journey is different because this particular journey is not just a physical one – like going from England to Jamaica. This journey is the destination. What do
