A Gentleman in Moscow tells the story of Count Alexander Rostov who is an aristocrat living during the rise of communism. Because he is an aristocrat, he is sentenced to house arrest. He must now remain in the Metropol Hotel and will be put to death if he leaves.
The book became a New York Times bestseller in 2016. It was also the best book of the year for The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Chicago Tribune, and NPR. The novel is "marvelous," according to The Chicago Tribune. It is layered with "richness," according to Entertainment Weekly and full of energy, in the opinion of The Wall Street Journal.
