About this ebook

The book of Colossians is Paul's letter to a young, confused church that faced the problem of false teaching. In it he masterfully presents Jesus Christ as Creator/Sustainer of the universe and the supreme Head of the church. The book of Philemon is a personal and warm letter from one believer to another. Speaking on behalf of Onesimus, a runaway slave, Paul implores Philemon to be merciful and take him back now as a Christian brother rather than a slave.

The books in the Jensen Bible Self-Study Guide series are designed to provide you with a broader understanding of God’s Word. Offering historical context and background, author information, charts, and other helps, these books will equip you with a comprehensive reference tool you’ll return to often. Each study includes an opportunity for analysis, response, and further study in a response-oriented format. The thirty-nine books in this series are suitable for both personal and group use.

    Introduction

The apostle Paul did some of his best thinking and writing as he sat chained for months in a Roman prison. From this time of confinement his remarkable prison epistles have come to us. They are remarkable for their wealth of content and conciseness of expression.

While in prison, Paul received an unexpected visitor, the slave of his old friend Philemon. After a mutually rewarding visit, Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon with Tychicus, another of Paul’s friends, and two letters, one for all the Christians of Colosse and one for Philemon personally.

The contents of these two short letters have contributed immeasurably to our understanding of proper doctrine and Christian living. If you study them carefully, Colossians and Philemon will prove effective in your life as they were to the original readers. And may you, as one whom Paul addressed, learn that in all things he [Christ] might have the preeminence.

    Suggestions for Study

    1. Spend most of your Bible study time studying the words and phrases of the Bible text itself. God inspired it and made it profitable for everyone, not just for men and women trained in Hebrew and Greek. This study
