Brief History
Hong Kong’s history began when China was defeated in 1842’s Opium War and surrender HK to Great Britain for more than 60 years. Under colony, the city has served as the focal point of international trade.
The beginning of the 20th century and the influx of refugees and immigrants made the city the hub for the manufacturing industry giving more character and energy to the city. However, the Sino Japanese War in 1937 has made thousands of refugees from mainland China move to HK. In 1941, Japan already conquered HK and the number of people dropped due to people moving to mainland China due to food shortage.
In year 1946, thousands of former residents went back as Great Britain rebuilt the civil government. The following years were the periods of economic revival and developments. By 1970’s, the city got the nickname Asian Tiger
with its rising technology and economy.
