About this ebook
“The way I see it,” said Daniel, “the fence lizard eats the fly, so the fly becomes part of the fence lizard. The fly is the fence lizard. The fence lizard gets eaten by the snake, and thus becomes the snake. What’s to say that snake won’t get snatched up by a Golden Eagle, and thus become the eagle?”
Does the same principle apply to humans? Marina is about to find out.

LIFE-CHANGING (adj.): altering a person’s life or circumstances in a substantial way. Examples of life-changing events include near-death experiences, going to college, having a baby, and other Phew! or Wow! moments. She might not have noticed the puking bird had it not been perched atop the ocotillo she happened to be standing under at the precise moment the bird chose to vomit. She might not have gotten hit in the face had she not looked up to see what was making the retching noise overhead. But she was, and she did, so there you have it.
Unrelenting was the only way to describe the summer heat in the Colorado Desert of Southern California. Unrelenting, and brown. Desert sand brown. Dust-over-gray-granite brown. Dust-over-olive-creosote brown. The ocotillo feigned death, their thorny skeletons baking under the unforgiving sun.
Then the rains came, and the desert exploded into bloom. Delicate stalks of lupine danced in the afternoon
