About this ebook

When twelve year-old misfit Midnight Reynolds takes a job helping out eccentric Miss Appleby in the mansion down the street, she never imagined her work would involve battling ghosts. But as it turns out, Midnight and her new employer have quite a bit in common—they were both born on Halloween and have the power to see spirits of the dead. But when Midnight learns more about the history of her town, she starts to wonder if she's fighting on the right side.

Midnight is thrilled when she moves to a new town and falls in with the popular crowd. But their expensive tastes are hard to keep up with, so she needs to find a job to help her out. When an older neighbor offers her one, Midnight is thrilled ... until she learns the job is basically ghost hunting. She's not sure if that's something she wants to take on, but she's certain it won't help her "cool" factor.A lot of this book felt like setting up the main character and the people around her, as well as the mechanisms of the supernatural aspects. When it starts becoming obvious that all is not what it seems, about two-thirds of the way in, is when it finally became compelling. Before that I was wondering how on earth this was going to be a series, although the conclusion also brings me back to that feeling. As seems obligatory in every middle-grade novel these days, there is a lot of emphasis put on the plot lines about friendship ... learning what a true friend is and so forth. Midnight also has an interesting family dynamic with an older sister, a widowed mother, and a soon-to-be stepfather all in her home. While I could see older elementary and middle school-age children being into this series (especially those transitioning up from shorter chapter books like the Eerie Elementary and Notebook of Doom series), it didn't really do that much for me. However, since those children are the target audience (and not me!), that's probably fine.
