The Final Outing - Lucille Femine
Fannie was just over three when her Dad was about to take her out for the first and only time. She was unusually bright and began talking at a year old.
In the kitchen of the four-room railroad apartment in Brooklyn, she sat in the old wooden chair on the ancient linoleum floor, which wouldn’t be replaced for some time. It just peeled its way to oblivion, revealing the previously worn out one.
Lilly, a tired, slightly underweight thirty year old who had just begun dying out her grey hair, stood over Fannie as she swung her feet back and forth, anticipating this historic moment in her short life and making it a challenge for her mom to finish dressing her.
Her outings were limited to visits with her sick grandmother who complained about every cell in her body or the park, which was more concrete than grass.
Hold on, sweetie,
Lilly said with loving impatience, her mood always lightened by Fannie’s bright, energetic innocence and optimism. She slipped on the black, patent leather shoes she had worn for Easter a few months earlier. Her pink, flowered dress was slightly too small but would have to do. Frank’s spotty work history as a truck loader didn’t make enough to buy many frills.
"Are you coming with us, Mommy? Fannie
