    About the Author

    Wyoming 1800’s

Jennie Davis threw the wet sheet over the clothesline and pulled it straight across the rope stretched between two trees so the wind could blow it dry. Fall weather came sooner this year than she thought it would. This was the first time in a couple weeks that the sun was shinning and it warm enough to hang clothes outside without them being stiff from the cold.

She tuned to pick up the basket when the neighing of a horse made her turn to look through the tree line at the back of her cabin. A lone cowboy rode out from between the trees towards her. He sat easily in the saddle but slumped a little as though tired.

    Howdy, Ma'am.

Hello. May I help you?  She saw him take off his battered cowboy hat.  His hair was dark blonde with lighter streaks bleached from the sun.  His face was dirty, but she could tell beneath it all, he was downright handsome, and his blue eyes were a clear blue like the sky above.

Yes, Ma'am. I was hoping I could buy a meal from you and a night in your barn. I've been riding a long time and need to rest a spell.

You runnin' from the law or anything?

No, Ma'am. Just roaming around. I don't have any place to call home.

    What's your name?

    "Lonesome.
