About this ebook

Marion Thomas, expat American and newly arrived in a southern city, is still nursing wounds from a tragedy that occurred on her birthday one year ago. Searching for a cafe, she plans a low-key celebration of how far she’s come -both literally and figuratively- in the past year. Sidetracked by an invitingly open door; instead of a latte, she finds a mysterious library tucked away in the basement, and a lively ‘gift with purchase’ that proves far more than she bargained for.
For this Library lends not only its books but the characters as well -though only to a chosen few and with a purpose to which none other than the Head Librarian is privy. Marion is informed by Mrs Sera Tosthene, the tart-tongued Head Librarian, -whose name bears an uncanny resemblance to that of the chief librarian from the ancient library of Alexandria- that she has been selected to receive this very special gift. Marion, assuming that she is the unwilling patsy for a reality TV show, doesn’t take it at all seriously. Despite being instructed not to touch books she doesn’t intend to borrow, she runs her hands willy-nilly along the shelves; then is utterly gobsmacked to see a cast of literary characters running (and flying) around the library as a result! She is momentarily distracted from her search as she watches Mrs T. display an impressive prowess with a lasso, while rounding the escapees up ...well, most of them. That pesky bat proves too hard to catch!
The Head Librarian is less than impressed with her wanton behaviour and begins a countdown. With time running out, Marion must choose a book or lose the chance to discover if this is for real or just a sham. At the last moment, she grabs a slim volume, the title of which she cannot discern and slides into home base (well, the downstairs check-out desk). She departs the library with her hastily chosen book in a brown paper bag and instructions to begin reading only once she is home.
Unimpressed with the entire experience, Marion retires to the cafe and drinks several coffees, while ignoring the note Mrs T. has pinned to the bag, then returns to her apartment. Her chosen book is revealed to be Jack London's 'Call of the Wild' and she reads a couple of chapters before falling asleep.
Around two o'clock the next morning ...she really wished she'd read that note!

Irene Davidson

Irene Davidson is the writing pseudonym of Adrienne Oaks. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Science (major in Botany) followed by two years post-graduate study in Landscape Architecture, one year in secondary teaching training and a year of psychology, social geography and design. She is taking a well-earned rest from further tertiary education for now. Growing up in the far south of the far south of New Zealand, she soon noted that it was a very long way from ...anywhere. She started travelling as a secondary school exchange student to that ‘other’ south, ...Tennessee, USA. Post her post-graduate diploma, she flew to London, where she worked in several jobs, including Landscape Architect in a building overlooking Buckingham Palace’s gardens, before producing the first of two wonderful children. Her CV now consists of a curious mélange of academic achievements, places travelled and an unusual mix of workplaces ...she could also add several months of ‘Chateau cleaning’ in France to her résumé but feels it may reduce the tone somewhat. She utilises the bountiful experiences she has garnered from all this travelling and working abroad in her writing. Having returned to that ‘other’ south in 2016, after a year of living in Chattanooga, she has recently relocated to Washington State with her husband and their rescued ex-racing greyhound ...who sleeps in Seattle while she writes.
