Chapter One

Lynne Young brought her brand new vehicle to a standstill outside her older sister’s apartment. There were a couple of vehicles parked on the lawn, and five more vehicles were parked in the driveway. She pulled a brush through her wavy shoulder length blonde hair, and then she grabbed the neatly wrapped package with the cheerful birthday card, and climbed out of her vehicle. She walked hurriedly up the driveway, and straight to the front door. She knocked, and the door was opened by Lara Young, her beautiful sister. Her face wore a happy smile, and she felt even more happy when she saw Lynne. Oh, I’m so glad that you’re here. Come on inside, she enthused.

Lynne stepped into the lounge and embraced her sister warmly. Happy birthday, Lara. You finally turned thirty, and you still look as beautiful as ever, she said radiantly.

Although it was half past six in the evening, it was still light outside, because it was the month of December, and it was summer, and the days stayed lighter for longer. It was Lynne’s favorite time of the year. Lara thanked her for the compliment, and peeked out through the front door at her sister’s new vehicle. So you finally went and did it, hey? You finally made the leap and bought yourself a brand new vehicle, and from where I’m standing it looks like a spunky cutie on wheels. So lovely and red, and it seems to be begging me to take it for a test drive. Lynne threw back her head and laughed. Oh, well, I had no choice. My previous vehicle was so old and battered, and yesterday, while I was driving to work, the bonnet flew up, and then it flew completely off into the road. Luckily there wasn’t another vehicle in front of me. I felt so shocked and so deeply embarrassed, and for a while I just sat there, clinging to the steering wheel, stunned beyond words. That’s when it dawned on me that it was time for a new vehicle. So I went and bought myself a brand new one, right after phoning the breakdown services from my cell phone. And since it’s Saturday tomorrow, I’ll close the lingerie store an hour earlier, so that I can come and pick you up and take you for a spin. Then we can go and eat something in our favorite restaurant, and go see a movie afterwards. How does that sound ?

Lara radiated vitality. Her face lit up with pleasure as she said, That sure sounds like a whole lot of fun to me. We haven’t been out together for ages, and it’s long overdue. I’ll be waiting for you tomorrow morning with rings on my fingers and bells on my toes. She then held out her hand expectantly, and in a voice that sounded almost like a purr, she asked, Now can I have my gift ?

Lynne gazed fondly at her sister. Then she handed her the neatly wrapped package with the cheerful birthday card, and said merrily, I sure hope you like it.

Lara smiled at her and said laughingly, You know me so well, and you always know what to get for me on my birthday. You’re the most wonderful sister. The expression on her face turned somber for a moment. Then she put her one arm around Lynne’s shoulder and hugged her close. I’m so glad that you’re okay after your ordeal with your battered old vehicle when the bonnet flew off into the road. You must have gotten such a fright. If something like that ever happens to me, I’ll flip my lid completely. That’s for sure.

Lynne heard the concern in Lara’s voice. I’m also glad that I’m okay. Believe you me. I put the whole nasty experience behind me already, and I’ve bought myself a brand new vehicle. It’s done and dusted, and now I’m happy again, and I can get on with my life, she said reassuringly.

She instructed her sister to open her gift, which Lara did without further ado. From the wrapping paper she pulled a very sexy nighty and also her favorite perfume. The nighty is from my new range at the lingerie store. It had you written all over it, and I just knew that you had to have it for your birthday, and the perfume is your absolute favorite, so yeah, I think I outdid myself this year in choosing your birthday gift, she said, sounding very chuffed with herself.

Lara seemed mesmerized by the loveliness of the nighty. Ooh…this is simply beautiful…so exquisite. Her eyes sparkled as she looked from the nighty to Lynne. You’re so right. You really did outdo yourself in choosing my birthday gift. I’m so glad that I have such a brilliant sister like you, she said happily. Then she hugged Lynne again, and said cheerfully, Thank you, my sweet sister. Thank you for the nighty and the perfume.

They were standing there smiling at each other, when Gary Healy and his younger brother David Healy came sauntering over to them. Gary hugged Lynne and said, Hello, beautiful. You seem to get more beautiful by the day. How are you ? Lynne smiled warmly at him, before replying, Oh, I’m just dandy, and I just love it when you compliment me. It will keep you in my good books forever.

He threw back his head and uttered a cheerful laugh. Then he gestured to David, and said, I’d like to introduce you to my younger brother David. He has a homestead on the outskirts of Uitenhage where he farms with cattle. He added as an afterthought, Not my type of lifestyle. I much rather prefer working in my second hand furniture store, and having Lara as my personal assistant, and as my girlfriend. My future looks rosy, and after all the long hours of hard work, I feel snug as a bug.

Lynne looked at him and said sincerely, I’m truly happy for you that things are going so well. It just warms my heart. Then she turned her attention to David, and said pleasantly, I’m very pleased to meet you, David. I saw you in your brother’s second hand furniture store on a couple of occasions while I quickly popped in to see my sister, but I never had the time to introduce myself properly, because I live my life on the run, and I exist on a caffeine boost, and a hurriedly eaten scone every now and then. I’m so glad that we finally got the chance to meet properly. David Healy awarded her with a slight smile. His piercing brown eyes looked deeply into her bright blue eyes, and he liked what he saw. He shook her hand warmly, and said, It’s a pleasure to meet you too, and my brother’s right, by the way. You’re very beautiful."

Lynne felt pleased by his compliment. Very pleased. Why, she did not know. She rolled her eyes dramatically at Lara and Gary. Ooh…it seems like we have another flatterer in our midst, she said perkily. Then she laughed light-heartedly, and asked, wide-eyed, What’s a woman to do?

Chapter Two

David seemed entranced by her. She looked like a doll with her wide innocent eyes. He suddenly found himself wondering what she would look like in the throes of unrestrained passion, and suddenly he felt an urge to kiss her on her beautiful red lips. He was about to open his mouth to speak, when Edwina interrupted him rudely. She addressed Lynne when she said accusingly, and at the top of her lungs, Stop throwing yourself at my man, you little floozie, you. You’ve been ogleing him ever since you got here, and I’m not going to hand him over to you on a silver platter.

She clutched David’s arm, and led him further into the lounge. He was too flabbergasted to say anything. Lynne felt so embarrassed, because even though the music was playing and the birthday party was in full swing, everyone had overheard those terrible words, and now everyone was looking at her. She suddenly wished fervently that she could turn into an ornament. Gary and Lara both looked highly upset, and after bringing his emotions under control, Gary was being the perfect gentleman when he apologized profusely. Then he said with a note of contempt in his voice, That little bitch is Edwina Munro, and she’s the one who is throwing herself at my brother. She’s absolutely shameless. She shouldn’t be wearing a beautiful necklace around her neck, but rather a choke chain and a leash. He shrugged irritably, and he sounded very disgruntled when he said, She’s David’s neighbor’s daughter, and she thinks very highly of herself. She just sat waiting for David’s girlfriend to leave him, and then she pounced on him like a overfed cat. She’s beautiful with her red hair and green eyes, and peaches-and-cream complexion, but she’s totally empty on the inside. She has absolutely no depth. She’s a frivolous type of character, and I have no time for her. She’s so narcissistic, it’s sickening. If David had any sense, he would start running in the opposite direction from her, and never look back.

Lynne felt a little bit better upon hearing his words. Well, she still looks young, so maybe when she’s a bit older she’ll change. There’s always hope, you know, she uttered kindly.

Gary snorted indignantly. Hope my foot. A leopard never changes its spots. My goodness, she’s so toxic that if ever she were to fart, it would be similar to a nuclear explosion. Both Lynne and Lara started laughing cheerfully, and as they laughed, Gary started to relax, and then it wasn’t long before he smiled again.

Her brother Peter beckoned to her, so Lynne excused herself politely and walked over to Peter Young and his wife Susan. Peter had brown hair and brown eyes, and he was tall with slim hips. He had a confident manner, and he was kind and sincere, and he also knew what he wanted from life. Lynne thought that he was the best brother that one could have, and she felt blessed to have him in her life. He was always there for her when she needed him. At the age of thirty two he still looked young, and he approached each day of his life with heaps of energy and loads of enthusiasm. He went at life like a dog went for a bone, and his gorgeous wife Susan adored him. They were married for eleven years, and they were still very much in love. Lynne thought that their marriage was beautiful and special. She liked Susan a whole lot and she got along well with her. She smiled brightly at them both and said pleasantly, Hello you two. I haven’t seen you for ages. Oh, wow. I’m so glad that it’s Lara’s birthday, because we have a lot of catching up to do.

Peter regarded his youngest sister smilingly. Hello, Lynne. We should really try a little harder to make more time for each other, but sometimes it’s a little difficult when one has too much to do, and so little time, he said graciously.

Susan brushed her fingers through her long blonde hair, and greeted Lynne pleasantly. Then she let out an exasperated little sigh, and chirped in very eloquently, You should learn to give yourself a break, Peter. You know the old saying, all work and no play, well…there is definitely some truth in those words. You need to set aside some time for your family and your loved ones, and then you’ll really make the most of each and every day. It’s as simple as that.

Lynne nodded her head in complete agreement with her sister in law. You should listen to your wife, Peter. She’s a very wise woman. Even if you’re a workaholic, and you like getting things done, you must always remember that it’s never too late to change. In a few years from now you’ll be glad that you spent more time with your family and loved ones, because at the end of the day, that’s what is really important. Your family and your loved ones.

Peter shrugged, and said in a friendly tone of voice, I know that I work way too hard, but I really love what I do, but since it’s nearly the end of the year, and almost time for new year’s resolutions, I promise that I’ll make more time for my family and loved ones. Are you both happy now ?

He smiled deeply into their eyes, and they both laughed happily, and high fived each other. Susan’s green eyes sparkled joyfully, as she said, I’m so proud of you, my darling. So very proud.

Peter gazed at his lovely wife with complete adoration. Then he leaned over and kissed her lightly on her full red lips, causing a light flutter in her heart. He then stood up from his chair to go and fetch some champagne for them, and Lynne went and sat down on a chair opposite Susan, and they made small talk. Susan was busy talking about a new night cream that she bought the other day, and how expensive it was, and about how chuffed she was feeling, because she was starting to see results. Apparently her skin felt a whole lot smoother and softer after just a couple of days of regular use of this particular night cream. Lynne felt impressed, and she made a mental note to try this night
