About this ebook

Assessing and managing pain—the primary symptom for those seeking health care—is imperative in every RN’s daily practice. Pain management nursing takes this further with its specific focus to alleviate pain, improve pain relief, optimize function, and maintain quality of life of patients across the life span and in every practice setting.
The premier resource for today’s pain management nurse, Pain Management Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition is informed by ongoing advances in nursing, patient care, and the understanding of pain in its many dimensions. It addresses what every RN in this evidence-based practice specialty needs to know, including practice roles, tenets and principles, essential knowledge and skills, ethical considerations, and trends in care, education, public policy, and technology.
This new edition’s 17 competency-based standards provide a framework for evaluating practice outcomes and goals and for delineating what is expected of all pain management nurses. Its scope of practice—which establishes the who, what, where, when, why, and how of their practice—is the context for applying these standards.
Among the pain management and pain care topics covered:
-Pathophysiology of pain in the context of each patient’s safety, pain perception and response, and biopsychosocial–spiritual needs
-How each of the nine provisions of the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements can be applied in practice
-Multimodal pain management options to achieve best treatment outcomes
-Emerging insights from genetics and genomics into such areas as opioid metabolism and pain perception, and response to opioid analgesics
-Networking, partnering and collaborating
-Patient care and guidance using data from digital prescription monitoring programs and patient apps
Pain Management Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition is a must-have for practicing or aspiring pain management nurse, and a useful resource for interprofessional practitioners and stakeholders involved in pain care.

About the American Society for Pain Management Nursing

The mission of the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN®) is to advance and promote optimal nursing care for people affected by pain by promoting best nursing practices. This is accomplished through education, standards, advocacy, and research. ASPMN’s goals are: access to quality pain management care, public awareness of self-advocacy skills essential to pain care needs, member access to professional resources, pain management education for healthcare professionals and their patients, and professional recognition for the expertise of pain management nurses as members of healthcare teams.

    About the American Nurses Association

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the premier organization representing the interests of the nation’s 3.6 million registered nurses. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting a safe and ethical work environment, bolstering the health and wellness of nurses, and advocating on health care issues that affect nurses and the public. ANA is at the forefront of improving the quality of health care for all.

    About ANA’s Specialty Nursing Standards

Since the late 1990s, ANA has partnered with other nursing organizations to establish a formal process for recognition of specialty areas of nursing practice. This includes the criteria for approving the specialty itself and the scope statement, and an acknowledgment by ANA of the standards of practice for that specialty. Because of the significant changes in the evolving nursing and healthcare environments, ANA’s approval of specialty nursing scope statements and its acknowledgment of specialty standards of practice remain valid for five years, starting from the publication date of the documents.

In 2015, a workgroup of American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) nurse leaders convened to revise the Pain Management Nursing: Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice [ASPMN & American Nurses Association (ANA), 2005]. The first edition was revised to reflect current principles and evolving perspectives while encompassing the breadth and depth of pain management nursing.

The workgroup used the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2015b) and the Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, Third Edition (ANA, 2015a) as fundamental resources and completed the revision via telephone conference calls, electronic mail communications, and face-to-face writing sessions.

In 2016, a draft document was posted on ASPMN’s web site (www.ASPMN.org) and ANA’s web site (www.nursingworld.org) for a 21-day public comment period. The workgroup reviewed all comments and further revised the draft as appropriate.

The ANA Committee on Nursing Practice Standards then completed its review of the draft Pain Management Nursing: Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, Second Edition against established review criteria. Recommended revisions were completed before the ANA’s Board of Directors conducted a final review and approved this nursing specialty scope of practice statement and acknowledged the standards of pain management nursing practice.

Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations [American Nurses Association (ANA), 2015a, p. 1].
