The psychic's small waiting room smelled like Darien's grandmother — lavender, with a hint of mothball. Made part of him wonder if she had a tray of gingerbread cookies hiding under one of the countless doilies in assorted colors that seemed to cover every surface .
Truth was Darien didn't care if she did. Didn't care that the antique loveseat he sat on was as stiff as his back. Didn't care that the coffee table had multicolored pillar candles arrayed according to the "tree
of
life
."
Didn't care what the tree of life
was, for that matter.
Darien didn't want to know his future. He wanted to contact
the
dead
.
So his knee kept bouncing a steady pace, creaking the scuffed wooden floor under the rainbow throw rugs that looked like giant doilies. And tugged at his shirt against the heat, made cloying by the homeopathic
humidifier.
And he waited.
Fifteen minutes felt like fifteen years, but finally the teenage girl in the simple shirt and slacks — the one who took his money when he came in — swung open the inner door and said, "Madam Louisa will see
you
now
."
Darien gave his carbonated stomach a quick rub, took a deep breath and pushed through the doorway.
