Part of the greater Goshen Sagas series I and my friend are creating.
A Tale of Intrigue and Reconnaissance follows a lone spy as he journeys from the snowy Abimelech Mountain Range to the the River City of Levyt, further still to the island of the Gawei and beyond. The objective of his travels is to gather information on any threats to the League with whatever means required. The spy's first assignment is to gather intel on the recent rumors from the Abimelech. He has recently made his way to the mountain paths on outskirts of the Abimelechs' Great War Hall and now hides in the snow covered brush as he looks for an opportunity to infiltrate the War Hall's walls.

Things have never been easy in life but I've always found escape in readings and playing games since I was young. This gave rise to an enjoyment of writing. I would write After Action Reports for my favorite play-throughs of games.Then recently my friend, Dillon Sapp, came up with the idea of creating a new Literary world. So I joined him and for the last year or so, we have been building the Planet of Goshen, with a plethora of races, factions, and histories; even a Crusader Kings 2 Mod(That I coded myself.). Great War Hall
A man squats in the bushes along a road, hunkered down, his eyes scan the frozen path in front of him. His face had numbed some time ago from the bite of the wind in the icy mountains.
Come on, come on,
he whispers to himself as he wraps his arms around his torso and tries to warm himself. The humble and worn garb he borrowed from an acquaintance was doing little to dampen the sting of the frosty clime as he waits for a baggage train.
Finally!
he thinks to himself as the creaking of wagon wheels and accompanying chorus of shouts, animals, and general merriment that make up a trading convoy reach him. He spots the caravan pooling in a nearby clearing and makes his way through the brush just as the sun, Lux, falls behind the Abimelech mountains, robbing the mountain paths of its light.
The noisy hustle of dozens of people making camp carries out on the wind to him.
Jo’del, get some wood and make the fires,
he hears barked in the Abimelech language as he grows close to the camp grounds, drawing his attention to a husky man with dirty gray hair. The man motions to a group of men and women, each dressed in garb similar to that which he now wore.
Of course.
Yes, sir.
Right away, Chief.
He watches as a dozen men respond before they make for surrounding woodlands. He quickly grabs up branches, twigs, and fallen bark from the snow about him, piling it high in his near frozen arms then waits for the men to return. He slips into the camp and joins them as they pile the collections and put some kindling to flame on the outskirts of the clearing. Before long, the campground is encircled by the fires and the Jo’del rejoin the caravan.
Very good. Now get some food going for the camp.
The husky man calls commands to the Jo’del, who, again, respond with Yes, chief.
s and Right away, sir.
s before they split up amongst the inner carts to light cooking fires.
Boadon catches me, I’m in,
the spy sighs with relief as he walks to one of the nearby wagon trains and kneels down to strike up a fire in the midst of a group of the Abimelech. The Abimelechi warriors sitting around the fire take little notice of him as he sees to their meal and they go about one-upping each other with tales of valor in this raid and that.
Liar, you weren’t there. I was on that raid!
one of the warriors interrupts and shoves the one telling the story.
How dare you,
the storyteller shouts back, grabbing his axe, Varo give my arm the strength to kill this fool!
The accuser frees his axe from his belt and readies it in a wary defense.
Enough,
the husky grey-haired man’s voice booms as he stares down the two warriors. Ya damn fools, put your axes away!
The two warriors jump then quickly put their axes down.
Forgive us, Axglor.
Sorry, Chief.
While Axglor knocks the two warriors to the ground and the rest of the Abimelech laugh, the spy slips away to another part of the camp as far as possible from the others so he can sleep. While in the rest of the camp, several of the warriors pull one Jo’del or another into their tent as they retire for the night, some choosing women, others choosing men.
The spy wakes up for the third time in the night and joins the Jo’del in stoking the campfires while the Abimelech sleep, taking care to keep a low profile and avoid encounters with the others. Each of the times he moves about the fires on the edge of the camp, he can hear low growls and shuffling in the snow-covered wooded boundary out in the darkness. As if some number of creatures were just out of sight, waiting for some sign to chase him down.
This time, after the fires were fed, the noises had instilled in him such a great fear that he could not get himself to sleep. And so he just sat in the cold warming himself, a bit further from the outer edge than before, until the sun broke the dawn horizon and the camp slowly stirs with life.
Alright, get yourselves some food and break the camp,
Axglor commands the convoy, and eat well, we’re moving on to the Great War Hall and I want to get there before Lux sets today.
With that, the camp erupts with clamor as everyone prepares food and dismantles the camp. As the spy and the Jo’del smother the fires around the boundary, the camp is finally broken down and the convoy starts on the path once again. He drifts throughout the convoy as they march the snow clad paths, staying close to the other Jo’del, doing his best to avoid attention from anyone.
As the sun nears its retirement, he makes out the silhouette of short wooden walls in the distance and a great horn blast rings out as the assemblage nears.
Aye, finally, we made it,
Axglor declares to the train of people as they pour into the grounds inside the walls and the spy finds himself in a bustling courtyard filled with hundreds of Abimelech and Jo’del. Axglor then gives orders to some of his warriors, Find us some territory and set up an encampment.
As Axglor’s convoy breaks apart amongst the camps, the spy takes the opportunity to slip away.
Let’s see what we can find,
he says to himself as he flutters among the crowds, avoiding any close inspections and eavesdropping on conversations when he gets a chance. He hears many of the same or at least similar tall tales as in the camp as warriors compare battlefield feats.
Eh, I heard he fell sick,
the spy overhears, which piques his interest, so he ducks behind a nearby wagon to listen in on the conversation.
No, no, no. I’m telling you, Rhun killed him,
a warrior raises his voice in annoyance at another. Think about it, his brother dies and he just happens to be there to take the seat?
The other warrior grabs the shouter. Quiet you thick-skulled Auroch! If someone hears that talk…
The shouter instantly stops talking and sits beside the warrior who grabbed him, so the spy glides away to see if there’s anything more he can learn.
After a few hours of slithering between groups and boundless blusterings and braggings of battlefield bravado from the braggarts, the spy doesn’t learn anything of note until a guard enters the courtyard.
High Chief Rhun of the Bloodstone, holder of the Ring of the Twelve Clans has called a council of the Chiefs to pay homage and discuss his plans. He declares that you may enter the Great War Hall with no more than one warrior as your second.
As the guard turns to leave, a number of men in the crowd take up their axes and make for the hall. The spy recognizes Axglor among them and shadows them on their march.
As he follows the warriors towards the Hall, the spy notices the torches lining the approach are crafted from skulls but not those of any animals. A shiver runs down his spine.
Boadon cover me, don’t let these savages find me,
he whispers in prayer before hanging back to think when he sees the warriors pass several guards and enter the hall.
After Lux slips from the sky, he stumbles up to guards.
Can I go in? I’m quite cold,
he says in Levytan when the guard pushes him away.
What did you say, Jo’del?
the guard questions in Abimelech, cocking his head to the side in confusion. The spy grabs himself and rubs his chest miming, Cold. Inside?
the spy says in Abimelechi. The guard shakes his head and pushes him, Damned Jo’del. No one inside without Rhun’s permission. Now back to the courtyard with you.
The spy nods and starts back to the courtyard, avoiding the sight of the skull torches. He hides in the darkness on the outskirts of the collective. He watches as the Abimelechi chiefs and their protectors finally return from the hall after several hours and shamble to their tents.
Ok, you can do this,
the spy talks to himself, pulling back his hair and cleaning his face with some snow before he approaches the tent of the warrior who accompanied Axglor.
May I enter?
he whispers as he pulls back the tent flap.
‘No." the warrior calls back, the spy recognizes the anger in his voice.
Please,
he enters the tent, It’s cold tonight… we can warm each other?
Get…
the warrior turns to face him, you’re a new one.
The spy nods, with a slight smile, and the warrior rises before approaching him, grabbing a drinking horn from a nearby table and taking a large gulp.
Yes, it is cold,
the warrior grabs his smooth face and squeezes it. You sure you want to stay here, Jo’del?
The spy again nods and the warrior gives him a sip of the horn before
