It was enjoyable and I enjoyed the character but there were so many mistakes in the writing it threw me. I would have to read a sentence a couple of times to realize no I’m not reading it wrong it’s that messed up. I mean I get that happens and 1 or 2 is easy to let slide but this was enough that it took me from the story, as short as it was

It was an enjoyable quick read. Although I must admit that I thought it was a full novel and so was slightly disappointed when it ended so quickly. It did end well though so no complaint there.

Chapter 1

Evangeline

I take a deep breath and let it out for what feels like the twentieth time.

Today is the day.

The day I give my two weeks notice.

It might not sound like a big deal. People resign from their jobs every day.

They turn in their notice, finish out their two weeks, and move on to the job they're leaving for.

Easy.

Simple even.

I envy them.

My situation is different.

None of those people have Christopher Blackwell for a boss.

Self-made billionaire at a ridiculously young age, he isn't slowing down any at thirty-two. He's built an empire on the software that initially launched his career in his early twenties. Since then, he's built another two world-renowned companies and continues to dominate the market in everything he works on.

As if that isn't intimidating enough, the man is ridiculously sexy.

Tall, built from hours spent boxing and at the gym, with a face that's all hard angles and masculine hollows. His dark hair somehow always lies like it doesn't dare move out of place, his face is shaved smooth but with a shadow that always comes in early in the day, and his icy blue eyes feel like they can pierce right through you when they make eye contact.

Yes, he's an intimidating boss. He's also demanding, exacting, and blunt sometimes to the point of rudeness.

But he pays well, and he's fair.

No, the reason I'm leaving isn't because this job isn't a good one. Being Christopher Blackwell's assistant is lucrative, definitely has its perks, and is very fulfilling professionally.

The problem is me.

Specifically, how I react to him.

The man is a menace.

Even after over a year working for him, my heartbeat increases when he enters the room. When he smiles at me, I feel it right down to my toes. When he comes in from the company gym and takes his shirt off on his way to the office, my thoughts are so far beyond appropriate I feel like it must be written on my face.

In short, I'm crushing on him. Hard.

And it's gotten way too pathetic.

When I first started this job, I thought it would go away with forced proximity. But it hasn't.

I think it's actually gotten worse, if anything.

There's just something about how sharp and agile his mind is that just fascinates me. In business, he operates on a totally different level than everyone else.

Hell, it's like he's playing a different game altogether.

The combination of physical beauty and intelligence he's been gifted with is really unfair.

And I'm tired of pining away for a guy I know is way out of my league. I'm tired of feeling like the sad girl in the background.

So I'm done.

I need to move on.

The new job I found actually pays more, but more importantly, my boss will be a proud grandmother of three.

Basically, as far as you can get from Christopher Blackwell, eligible bachelor and panty dropper.

I take another deep breath and stand up. There's no use delaying the inevitable.

I have to just go in there and do it.

Like ripping off a bandage. A very sexy bandage.

Maybe one made of black leather, though I don't know how practical that would actually be.

Okay, off track. Focus!

I deliberately timed it so that I can go home for the weekend right after this talk, in case I have to lick my wounds in private.

I knock on the closed office door and wait.

I'm going to have all the ice cream I want after this is done.

Come in, he calls out, his voice a little distracted.

No going back now.

I dry my hands on my slacks, open the door, walk in, and close it behind me.

Blackwell looks up briefly from the papers he has spread out over his desk. The skyline of the city is breathtaking behind him, a panoramic view that still makes me stare with awe.

I need to talk to you about something, I start, staring at the top of his head.

He's frowning a little as he reads something over.

Yes, go ahead, he murmurs, making a note on something.

I want to give my two weeks notice.

That gets his attention immediately.

He looks up sharply and makes eye contact.

You're quitting? he asks, frowning. Why?

I take a deep breath.

I've taken enough at this point that I might actually pass out. Wouldn't that be great.

I just need to get this over with.

I just thought I needed a change. I'm going to be starting my new job in two weeks.

He stands up and I automatically take a step back as he seems to take up more space in the room. It's not just his physicality, but also his overall presence.

He circles the desk and leans back against the edge closest to me, crossing his arms as he regards me.

How much more are they paying you? he asks bluntly.

Um, ah, ten thousand. It may not be a lot to him, but it's a significant amount of my salary.

He nods.

I'll double your salary and your vacation days.

I blink.

Double? I repeat dumbly.

He smiles slightly.

"Yes, double. I haven't had a better assistant than you. Frankly, you make my life
