This is...probably the most useless book you could imagine. If you are looking to gain any insight at all into neurological nursing, don't bother with this book. If you know the nursing process, then you know everything in this book.

The American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) are national professional associations. This joint AANN and ANA publication—Neuroscience Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition—reflects the thinking of the practice specialty of holistic nursing on various issues and should be reviewed in conjunction with state board of nursing policies and practices. State law, rules, and regulations govern the practice of nursing, while Neuroscience Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition, guides nurses in the application of their professional skills and responsibilities.

The American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN) is committed to working for the highest standard of care for neuroscience patients by advancing the science and practice of neuroscience nursing. Founded in 1968, the AANN accomplishes this through continuing education, information dissemination, standard setting, and advocacy on behalf of neuroscience patients, families, and nurses. AANN develops and supports nurses in providing excellence in care and promotes the neuroscience nursing specialty. As the leading authority in neuroscience nursing, AANN inspires passion in nurses and creates the future for the specialty.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses through its constituent/state nurses associations and its organizational affiliates. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

Preface

Neuroscience nursing is a nursing specialty that addresses the needs and care of individuals with biological, psychological, social, and spiritual alterations as a result of nervous system dysfunction. Registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) specializing in the practice of neuroscience nursing are challenged to provide care to patients and families within a complex and constantly changing healthcare environment. The roles of neuroscience registered nurses and APRNs are multifaceted and dynamic. It is crucial for neuroscience registered nurses and APRNs to be aware of the diverse statutes and regulations governing their practice and be able to perform within their defined scope of practice. This document is intended to assist the neuroscience registered nurse and APRN in developing a framework for practice.

Setting the Stage

Foundational Documents

Neuroscience Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice describes components of competent nursing practice and professional performance in the specialized field of neuroscience nursing. This document outlines the expectations of the professional role of the neuroscience nurse, identifies the scope of practice, and presents the standards of professional nursing practice with accompanying competencies for all neuroscience nurses.

Nurses practicing neuroscience nursing in the United States have several key foundational resources to inform and guide their practice. First, tenets of an ethical framework for neuroscience nurses practicing across all roles, settings, and levels of practice are identified through Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001) and Guide to the Code of Ethics for Nurses: Interpretation and Application (Fowler, 2008). Another significant foundational document is Nursing’s Social Policy Statement: The Essence of the Profession (ANA, 2010b), which conceptualizes nursing practice, describes the social context of nursing, and provides the definition of nursing. The final foundational resource is Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd ed. (ANA, 2010a). The scope and standards of neuroscience nursing practice have been developed from these documents.

Audience

Registered and advanced practice registered nurses specializing in neuroscience nursing constitute the primary audience for this professional resource. Healthcare providers and interprofessional colleagues, as well as administrators practicing in healthcare systems, agencies, and organizations, will find this a valuable reference in understanding the roles of neuroscience registered nurses and APRNs. In addition, patients, families, communities, and populations using neuroscience nursing services can use this document to better understand what constitutes the practice of neuroscience nursing and who its members are: registered nurses and APRNs specializing in neuroscience nursing. Finally, legislators, regulators, legal counsel, and the judiciary system may wish to reference this document to better understand what constitutes the practice of neuroscience nursing.
