About this ebook

The Malloy family are taking over the neighbourhood! Zeb Malloy loves drinking, women, and bachelorhood – not necessarily in that order. Next in line to brother Jed, Zeb often visits his siblings in Calgary when he's not working in the oil patch. On his latest visit, he discovers that all of his siblings have become entangled by love – something Zeb swears will never happen to him. He decides to become 'Cupid' for his poor heartsick brothers and sisters. He wasn't expecting to get hit with the arrow himself…

Note to readers: This series, although labelled 'Christian', does contain elements that may be troubling to some readers, such as the use of alcohol as well as pre-marital sexual encounters. (The latter take place 'off camera'.) There is, however, a faith based element throughout with a strong redemptive message at the end of the series.

Neighbourhood Cupid - Volume 6 - ZEB - Tracy Krauss

    SCENE 1

Zeb looked out the window of the turbo prop airplane as it circled the sprawling city of Calgary, Alberta. He worked a ‘fourteen and seven’ schedule in the oil sands in the northern city of Fort McMurray and sometimes he just needed to get away on his days off. It would have been cheaper for him to drive to Calgary, but it took at least eight hours on a good day and he didn’t want to waste any time on his week off from work.

Most of the time he stayed put, often fishing or hunting in the warmer weather and snowmobiling in the cold months. There was usually a fair bit of partying, too. But sometimes he just needed to get away for a while and Calgary was his usual choice since his eldest brother Jed lived in that city. Actually, several of his siblings lived there now, having recently moved from their home province of Newfoundland. He knew his parents - especially his mother - weren’t too happy about it, but kids grew up and had to live their own lives. One of these days he would take a flight back home to the east coast, but not this time.

His younger brother Will was entered in a bull riding competition on the weekend at a local watering hole and Zeb didn’t want to miss it. Will had been dubbed the daredevil of the clan, although Zeb recalled from their childhood that most of Will’s adventures had been inflicted by either himself or Jed. Poor young bugger.

Zeb stroked his shaggy red beard and smiled. He was looking forward to the visit. He hadn’t seen the gang in a couple of months and it was high time the Malloy clan got together again. It was sure to be a rocking good time.

The light aircraft sped toward the ground and hit the tarmac with a bump followed by a whoosh as it slowed to a stop. He fished for his cell phone in his jacket pocket and disabled ‘flight mode’ so he could call a cab. Normally he’d call Jed for a ride, but his arrival was a surprise and he wanted to keep it that way. He could hardly wait to see the look on Jed’s face.

    SCENE 2

L ard tunderin’! Jed stood wide mouthed at the door to his apartment. What the…? Why didn’t you call for a ride?

You gonna let me in or what? Zeb asked, a grin splitting his beard.

Ya big lummox! Jed swallowed Zeb in a bear-hug followed by several slaps on the back - their usual greeting.

Once out of Jed’s grip, Zeb pushed past his brother and then dumped his duffle bag unceremoniously in the hallway leading off the living room. He peered around the room, noting a few dirty dishes and beer cans on the floor near Jed’s favourite chair. Do I get the spare bed this time or is it the couch? I can never keep track of the strays you keep.

The place has been a regular flop house, that’s for sure, Jed said. But it’s just me and Pip now, so I guess you can take the couch.

I’m surprised you’re here and not down at the Urban Cowboy, Zeb said. He took his cell phone out of his back pocket and consulted the time. It’s only nine o’clock. Right early for a lush like you.

Tryin’ to slow down, Jed said. Sides, it’s a work night.

As I recall that never stopped you before.

Tryin’ to be a better influence on the young ‘uns.

    Ha! That’ll be the day.

Can’t fault a man for tryin’. Jed grinned. But now that you’re here, how’s about a beer?

    I thought you’d never ask.

Zeb settled himself on the couch while Jed went to the kitchen and cracked open two beer. He returned and handed one of the cans to Zeb, and then sat down across from him in his easy chair.

Where’s Pip at? Zeb asked before taking a long swig. It went down smooth as silk and he smacked his lips.

Not sure. He’s in a bad way these days, Jed said.

    Zeb frowned. Bad way how?

    Jed shrugged. Female troubles, mostly.

Got bit by the love bug, or what?

Maybe. He’s been right rotted the last little while, not to mention he’s in Lester’s bad books as well as Jacques’s.

    What he do? Zeb asked.

Two timing with both their sisters.

Patsi Mae? Zeb asked. He remembered Jed’s cowboy friend Lester and his little sister Patsi, and the fact that she had just moved home.

Jed nodded. I told ‘im he was nut jiggered to mess with ‘er in the first place, but Pip doesn’t listen too well.

Zeb grinned. That’s our Pip. And who’s the other one?

Jacques, the bartender from the Urban Cowboy?

    Right, right.

    "His sister
