      Quick Sweden Overview (Regions, Language, Etc)

      When it comes to planning your future Sweden trip, there are plenty of details you’re going to need to know before you arrive in the Scandinavian country, such as where you want to visit, what the currency is, and what types of traditions and culture you can expect to experience while there. This section of the guide will give you a helpful, general overview to give you more of a basic insight into the things you should know about Sweden in order to plan a safe, successful, and exciting trip.

      Regions of Sweden

      There are three primary regions that make up the country of Sweden, so it’s important to know what is located in each region, what there is to do and see, as well as what you can expect while traveling through a specific region. The regions will be covered in more detail in an upcoming section of the guide, so this is just a quick, general overview to give you an idea of where you might want to go while in Sweden.

      • Northern Sweden (Norrland) - This region is the least populated, in fact the population here is quite sparse. Despite that fact, the Northern Sweden region also accounts for more than half of the country’s total area. Here you will find plenty of wilderness, including forests, lakes, mountains, rivers, and marshes. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities to keep them busy here, including hiking and a wide array of winter sports. Main cities in this region include Lulea, Umea, Sundsvall, and Gavle.

      • Central Sweden (Svealand) - In the central region of Sweden, you’ll find the eclectic capital city of Stockholm as well as the intriguing medieval city of Uppsala. There are some great sites to see in the area as well, including the Great Copper Mine, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

      • Southern Sweden (Gotaland) - The southern region of Sweden has plenty of beautiful landscapes and true Swedish culture to offer the eager traveler. Here you’ll find rolling plains, white cottages, sandy beaches, and lovely fishing villages. This area is also one of the richest farming areas in all of Europe, so there’s going to be some great dining and farmer’s market opportunities as well.

      When to Visit

      One of the many unique things about Sweden is its wide range of climate and weather patterns. Temperatures can be influenced by the Gulf Stream and can vary from the southern fields all the way up to the Arctic Circle wilderness. Generally, the country does not get super hot. July would be the warmest time of the year for the Scandinavian country, so for those who prefer a warmer vacation, this would be the best month to visit. February generally sees the coldest temperatures, and it can get down to well below freezing, so keep that in mind if you intend on traveling during the winter months. The following is a guide to what the weather may look like depending on what season you which to visit Sweden.

      • Summer- The summer months of June through August are typically the most ideal times to visit Sweden. Not only is the weather the warmest in the summer months, but you’ll also find that this is when the majority of the cafes and open-air attractions will always be open for business. Keep in mind, however, that summer can tend to be the most expensive time to purchase airfare to Sweden since it is the country’s pique season. Some hotels may offer discounted summer rates to compensate for the high plane ticket though, so always ask and see if a discount is available.

      • Spring and Fall- The spring and fall seasons can be a lovely time to see Sweden, especially during the months of May and June as well as September. The weather is typically mild and the countryside areas are a beautiful sight to see, especially in the spring when all of the wildflowers are in bloom, giving color and life to the area after a long,
