About this ebook

CATCH ME WHEN I FALL

King of the one-night stand, Coop Stenson knows his warped upbringing and chosen profession with the Sentinels, a private security team, has conditioned him to avoid romantic attachments. Yet when accident-prone Matthew Whitton literally falls into his life, one thing is abundantly clear: Matt deserves more than a man-slut.

Matthew’s love is overpowering, and just as Coop is ready to take the plunge, having fought its inevitable pull for as long as he could, an old nemesis targets the partners of the Sentinels. So keeping Matt safe is about more than just another job or set of logistics. It’s about the rest of his life.

    EVERYONE LOVES

    THE BOYS OF BRIGHTON SERIES

I loved this book and I love this town. I hope there’s going to be more.

—Melissa Lemons, Author of Decisions on Gabe

"[Gabe] was a fantastically sweet love story. The characters drew me in right away, especially the swoon-worthy, alpha-male Gabe. I have to admit, I'm not an avid reader of M/M, but this highly exceeded my expectations. I couldn't help falling in love with the characters and cheering on their personal growth and blossoming romance."

—Virginia Cantrell, Author of Devine Merit

I loved this story from page one.

    —eBytes on Sam’s Soldiers

Sweet and unforgettable…a marvelous read. There’s suspense, action, and a love story that’s hard to beat.

    —Readers’ Favorite on Sam’s Soldiers

An amazing read that was filled with lust, love, crazy hot sex, danger, action and so much more. This is the first book I have read in this series, but I will definitely be reading more in the future.

—Gay Book Reviews on Sam’s Soldiers

I was crazy impressed that the author made me teary over the ending of a relationship that I shouldn’t have even been invested in. I didn’t yet know these characters yet the author made me hurt for them. That takes some mad writing skills!

    —Love Bytes Reviews

    READER REACTIONS TO THE BOYS

"I love this series. The author writes beautiful, damaged characters and their soul mates who defy odds and win their HEA no matter the cost."

    …Sweet and touching…hot and sizzling…

The love, drama, and intimate scenes are all well written. I would definitely recommend this book to romance lovers.

    Angst, sweetness, love and passion.

    Bear is the whole package.

Came to this book expecting one thing and got so much more. Now can’t wait for book four!

    Chapter One

Put me down! Matthew yelled for what had to be the tenth time in the last two hours. Right now!

You said you wanted to watch television, so here you go, Coop stated as he dropped Matthew onto the soft cushions of the couch.

I could have walked with my crutches, ya know, Matthew groused as he straightened his shirt.

It’s cute that you think so. Coop smirked and walked toward the spacious kitchen. The entire first floor was open concept, making it feel spacious.

Matthew looked down at his casted right foot with disdain; it was the reason he was at Coop’s mercy. It wasn’t his clumsiness—it didn’t matter that he’d fallen over his crutches a couple times since he’d gotten out of the hospital—Coop was just being bossy. Matthew wasn’t just trapped in Brighton until he could drive home; he was trapped with a babysitter. Buddy, Sam’s golden retriever, came over and sat beside Matthew, and he swore he saw sympathy in the dog’s eyes.

Matthew had come to Brighton, Texas, to help his friend Jesse and protect him from Jesse’s own family. It had taken years, but his friend’s relatives were finally where they belonged: prison. Jesse was now using his inheritance to build youth centers for both LGBTQ+ and heterosexual homeless youths. Matthew was helping him with the security system because some of these kids would be running from one thing or another and might need protection. Jesse had been running from his own family for ten years.

How’s your ankle feeling, Matthew? Sam asked as he sat down beside him holding a big bowl of buttered popcorn, which he held out to share with Matthew.

Healing way too slowly in my opinion. I’ll have killed Coop long before I’m cleared to drive, Matthew said with a huff.

You could always fly home, Sam offered as a solution. I mean, it’s your choice. We like having you here, and I know Shannon is beyond ecstatic to have another computer geek in the house.

I know I can stay, and if I go home, then I’ll be stuck without anyone to help, Matthew admitted.

Ah, so you concede you need Coop’s help. Sam smiled wide.

I need someone’s help, not Mr. Bossy’s, Matthew said in a huff.

Deal with it, shorty. I’m all you got, Coop stated as he sat on the other side of Matthew, commandeered the bowl of popcorn, and handed him a bottle of water.

You did this to me. Besides, aren’t I cutting into your search time for your next one-night stand? Coop had a reputation in the security field for his brute strength and his habit of sleeping with a new man every mission. Matthew couldn’t afford to let his guard down and like the handsome man. He knew how that would end.

You’re not interrupting anything. The Internet is a wonderful thing. You’d be shocked what you can get on there, Coop said with that devilish grin Matthew knew melted men’s hearts all over the world, but he had to remain unfazed. He couldn’t give in.

But the small spark of pain that sliced through Matthew’s chest was surprising, and he unconsciously rubbed at it. Of course Coop wasn’t with him twenty-four hours a day; he could leave for a hookup any evening he liked. Why did that thought make him sick?

Instead of concentrating too hard on that fact, Matthew simply stared at the television, though he had no idea what they were watching. Coop sat there as if waiting for the next barb, but Matthew wasn’t in the mood anymore, so he remained quiet and concentrated even harder on the giant seventy-five-inch flat-screen television. Sam moved over to another couch as Dante and Spider joined them. The three were the leaders of the Sentinels as well as lovers. Matthew fought to stay awake, but it was useless. He was just too damn tired and soon everything simply slipped away.

    *****

Coop felt Matthew’s body go limp beside him, his head resting on Coop’s shoulder. No man deserved to be as beautiful as Matthew was, and Coop knew better than to look too long. Matthew wasn’t a one-nighter. He was the type of man who did relationships, and Coop didn’t, period. Every man he’d been with knew the score before anything ever happened; Coop made sure of it. He didn’t want to break any hearts, but he knew over the years that he had, even if it was unintentionally. No one seemed to understand that he just couldn’t have a romantic relationship; it wasn’t possible, not anymore. When his need became too much, he headed to bars outside of Brighton to scratch that itch, or on missions if it was convenient, but lately he hadn’t wanted to leave the compound.

He knew what he’d said to Matthew about hookups on the computer was a lie, and honestly, he had no idea why he wanted Matthew to be jealous, but he did. The lack of a response was enough for Coop to know he’d hit a nerve. Why am I even concerned about Matthew? He’s simply an assignment. He’d been ordered to watch over the man until he was healed, and that was all. When Mouthy was healthy, he’d leave and everything could return to normal. Somehow that knowledge only made his tension worse.

Matthew’s body lay relaxed against him, and a small snore broke the silence. Why is it so quiet? Coop looked up to see Sam, Dante, and Spider, who were cuddling on the other couch, all staring at them. The three were the bosses of the Sentinels, and his fellow members, Shadow, Shannon, and Vincent, were all on missions at the moment. The Sentinels worked as a group of heavily trained bodyguards and retrieval specialists; all were former members of the military.

What? Coop whispered at the three, who were all smiling, which was beginning to freak him out a bit.

He doesn’t see it, Sam whispered to Spider.

Not a clue, Spider replied softly.

Neither of them do, Dante said.

Coop was beginning to think he was being laughed at, and he didn’t like it all that much. What the hell are you three talking about? Matthew squirmed a bit until Coop pulled him into his chest and spoke softly into his ear, and he fell back to sleep.

It’s nothing bad, Coop. You care for Matthew. It’s just odd to see you reacting this way, Sam explained.

I’m not acting any way different than I normally do. You put me in charge of him, and I’m doing just that, Coop explained as he pulled a cover over Matthew.

Okay, Coop. Whatever you say. It’s just nice to see, Dante said.

You’re imagining things, that’s all, Coop grumbled, then slid his arm under Matthew’s body and cradled him to his chest before he stood. He wasn’t sticking around to be made fun of, and he wouldn’t allow anyone to do so to Matthew either. It’s late. I’ll take Matthew up to his room.

Sure, Coop, whatever you say. Spider’s voice followed Coop up the stairs to Matthew’s room, which was directly across the hall from his own. He had to have him close by in case Matthew needed him.

He carefully maneuvered a still-sleeping Matthew through the door and to his bed. Coop had him almost on the mattress when Matthew’s injured foot slid from the blanket wrapped around him. It slammed straight into the footboard of the bed, causing Matthew to wake instantly and let out a small cry of pain.

But instead of pulling away from Coop, Matthew held on tighter and buried his face in Coop’s chest.

Easy, beautiful, I’ve got you. I’m so sorry. Your leg slipped out of my hold, Coop explained.

Coop looked down into Matthew’s eyes, one green and the other hazel, staring up at him in pain. Coop sat down on the bed with Matthew still in his arms as he arranged Matthew’s legs to hopefully ease the pain. He turned back to Matthew to find him still staring at him. A tear slid down Matthew’s cheek, and Coop gently wiped it away with his finger. His skin was so soft and his lips were full, and in that moment, all Coop wanted was to kiss Matthew.

As he leaned in close, Coop could smell Matthew’s cologne and his intoxicating male scent.
