Josiah -- It is Finished - David Bassett

    Dedication

Many years ago, my dad shared with me a story that was in his head and in his heart.  The story sounded intriguing to me and spoke of values that were central to his unique life experience.  It was, to me, truly a personal story that he should write.

In hindsight, I should have encouraged him and held me accountable for writing that story.  Several years after his death, his story was written by someone else.  It became a wildly successful book series.  He may not have ever written the book as well as others had written it, but, the content was compelling and had been his.

Being able to finish this series is, for me, a major accomplishment.  When the story first birthed in my heart, I never imagined the finished product to become what it is today.  I will take that as evidence that the creative process is not linear, but it appears to be a meandering path.  Some may call it a roller coaster ride.

I want to dedicate this book to my dad, who left us way too early.  His example, both the positive and negative aspects, carry a major and heavy influence on me.  Because he did not write his book, I have been impassioned to write my own, eventually.

I pray that you might learn from both of our examples.  When the creative spark of a story is inside of you, let it out.  Find the way to have that spark grow into a roaring fire.  Surround yourself with the people who will motivate, inspire, and encourage you to get that book done.

Dad, I hope that as you look down, you find a measure of pride in what I could accomplish.  You are, in part, responsible for my success.  Thank you for loving me.

Chapter 1 – At the End

Enter quietly, Jonas, he may still be asleep.

Where am I?  Josiah’s mind was beginning to process his situation.

He let an involuntary gasp as he attempted to move.

The door let out a gentle creak.  Realizing that the sound meant that someone was entering his home, a panic came over Josiah.  His panic was not over a concern that someone was entering his home, but, it was a panic over the realization that he was on the floor and had been for some time.

    Grandfather!

Jonas’ voice had a panicked edge to it and was quickly followed by Rebekah’s.

    Father!

As they hurriedly came to Josiah’s side, the old man was just beginning to regain his mental edge.  The grogginess of the extended black out was just starting to clear, but panic now filled the hearts of everyone in the room.

Lifting himself up with his right arm and leaning on his right hand as it was palm downward on the floor, Josiah’s mind raced.  Usually, he was effective in hiding any of his physical struggles, but now...

Oh, I slipped.  I heard you both coming to the door and tried to rush.  These old legs, Josiah looked down as he pulled his legs to position himself to stand, just don’t move as quickly as I am used to when I was younger.

Jonas and Rebekah stood on either side of Josiah and helped him to his feet.  He wobbled as he stood, causing the other two to react by each grabbing an arm.  They directed him to the closest chair and helped him ease into a sitting position.

Narrowing her eyes as she scanned her father, Rebekah spoke without turning her gaze away from him.

Jonas, please get some fresh water.  Your grandfather needs some cool water.

Yes, mother, Jonas immediately replied.  He moved across the room, grabbing the water pot and heading out the door.

Rebekah glanced up to be sure that Jonas was gone before she began to speak.

Father, she gave Josiah a determined look, you should know better than to lie to me.

Sheepishly, Josiah replied, What do you mean?

Rebekah straightened up.  She frowned as she placed her hands on her hips.

You did not just fall down.

But, Josiah attempted to respond but she cut him off.

Your skin is cold.  You have a crease mark across your face.  I can tell that you were on the floor, probably the entire night.

Josiah felt a bolt of anger shoot through his body.

How dare she speak to me that way, a dark voice within him snarled.

She is your daughter and loves you greatly, a gentle and still small voice replied within his heart.

Josiah had to make a choice.  Which voice would he follow.

Gently, he reached out and took Rebekah’s left hand with his right.

You are right, Rebekah, I should never lie to you.

She was immediately softened by his response.  He rarely called her by her name.  Usually, he referred to her as his daughter.

Father, her voice was now blanketed with concern, what happened?  Are you alright?

Josiah looked down.  Partly, he was embarrassed, but mostly, he still felt confused.

I’m not really sure.  I can remember you and Jonas leaving last night, but nothing more, until this morning.

Suddenly, Josiah became aware.  His entire body ached.  Reaching with his free hand, he began to rub the opposing shoulder and then his neck.

Do you need to lay down?

Before waiting for an answer, Rebekah began to pull at Josiah’s arm to lead him to his bed.

No, Josiah resisted, I feel mostly stiff and need to stand and stretch.  Would you help me to my feet?

Gently, Rebekah leaned in so she could wrap her arm around her father’s waist and help him up.  Slowly, he stood and began to walk across the room.  He still felt a bit unbalanced, but as they walked, his strength began to return.

Father, Rebekah began, but Josiah cut her off.

My daughter, I do need to be honest with you.  I have tried to hide my physical issues from you.  Many times, I have done that well, but, today shows that I cannot always do it successfully.

Rebekah’s eyes began to tear up.  Josiah’s heart began to melt.  He loved her greatly and it hurt him to think that he might have caused her any pain.

My time is short, Josiah felt his own confidence shaken as he said these words out loud.  He dropped his head, as he could not bear to exchange glances.

"I have lived a very blessed life.  You and Jonas are examples of that.  God has been very, very good to me.

Rebekah interjected, You and mother, have both taught me well to follow God and to love Him.  I could not have had better parents.

A soft sob escaped through her lips.  Her head dipped slightly to her right as she appeared to ponder her own words.

A brief silence filled the room.  Josiah reached out and held Rebekah close.  He knew that there would not be very many moments like this left for him.

Pulling away, he felt a sense of strength.  Looking her in the eye, he continued.

I have a final mission that I need to complete.  The things I have learned about God, about His love and purpose for each one of us, I must share while I can.  I am sharing them with Jonas and I must complete this mission.

Josiah was now holding Rebekah’s hands.  He squeezed them as he spoke the last phrase.

Rebekah gave a short, firm nod in response.  Josiah sensed that she understood and would encourage him in his resolve to complete the mission.

I believe that I only need today to finish.  Jonas has been very good to listen and has asked some very good questions.  He has made it easier to share than I expected.  But I need one more day.  I need today with him.

He looked intently into Rebekah’s eyes.  He anticipated that she would want to have him rest today, possibly for several days.  He knew that her first instinct would be to act on her urge to care for him.  But, he wanted her to see his resolve and hoped she would follow his lead.

With but a short hesitation, Rebekah nodded once more.

Father, I love you.  Throughout my life, you have given me many, many reasons to respect and trust you.  While I am uncomfortable and concerned for your health, I know your spirit is strong.  You must let me prepare your meals today and do what I can to care for you.  Please!

Josiah knew himself well enough, that he knew his greatest weakness was pride.  Since his wife had died, he took pride in being able to care for himself.  While Rebekah regularly provided for him, his pride allowed him to accept her help under the pretense that he was being kind to let her do it.

Today, I cannot stand on my pride.  I must stand on my love, Josiah thought.

Cupping her face with his right hand, Josiah smiled.

Yes, my daughter, I would be honored to have you care for me, today.

The door suddenly burst open.  Jonas came charging in.  His face appeared tinted with anger, maybe frustration.

Sullenly, he crossed the room with the water jug.  He set it down, expressing some disgust, which caused a small amount of water to spill.  The water splashed on his hand.  The cool dampness of it seemed to soften his emotions and heighten his awareness of where he was and what he was doing.

I’m sorry, grandfather, Jonas turned to Josiah.  His shoulders slumped, he blinked several times then hung his head.

It’s alright, Jonas, it is only water.

Josiah hesitated for a moment.  He was looking for a reaction from the boy, but none came.

Jonas, the boy now looked up at Josiah, the spilled water couldn’t have upset you.  What happened, what has you so upset?

Jonas let out an exasperated blast of breath.  He put his hands on his hips.  Spreading his feet slightly, he took a stance of defiance.

"I was getting water at the well when a priest came.  He had a
