Places may close, admission fees may rise, drivers will drive crazy, and public transportation routes can be altered. Introduction
It's a near-perfect time to visit Bucharest.
Bucharest is still recovering from a legacy of Communism, which was violently overthrown in a televised revolution in 1989. Since then, progress has come in fits and starts — far too slow in some ways, but surprisingly quick in others. First impressions are not kind, as the gray Communist-era buildings imply a lack of progress, but underneath that there is a spirit to the city. The public transportation system works well despite a lack of signage, prices are on the cheap side for Europe, and there's more offerings for tourists every passing day. It isn't at the same level as Western Europe, but it's coming soon.
To fully appreciate where Bucharest is today, you have to understand what it's been. The cosmopolitan city began to thrive in the late 19th century after Romania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. The building spree and influx of people helped the city became known as the 'Paris of the East'. That all changed decades later when Romania fought with Nazi Germany during World War II (at least until 1944, when it joined the Allied side). Romania's legacy includes the oppression and genocide of Jews, killing hundreds of thousands of Jews, second only to Nazi Germany. While Germany was taken to task for its actions, Romania arguably wasn't. The country faced no public international reckoning, and today the Jewish population is a scant fraction of what it was.
After World War II, Soviet-occupied Romania called for elections in 1946, which installed a Communist government under a fraudulent vote. The
