- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was my very first Jodi Taylor book, but I am excitedly starting the next in the Elizabeth Cage series (Dark Light) after my review.
I really enjoyed this book, particularly the unusually gentle voice of the protagonist, Elizabeth. Most paranormal books have sort of a sassy heroine from the get-go, but this really drew out and explained her demeanor in such a thoughtful and organic way that as she grew and changed, it felt really real to me.
I did feel like some of the big reveals of the book were a little expected and foreshadowed perhaps a little too strongly, but in a way it sort of made me crave the reveals even more, wondering when Elizabeth would find out (usually in ways I didn't expect, so they didn't feel predictable in a boring way).
I absolutely loved the setting and many of the side characters, even the more antagonistic ones were made interesting by their dialogue and Taylor's prose.
All around - the ending was so gasp-worthy (in just the right way to be both frustratingly abrupt and to leave you exactly in the same shock as Elizabeth was) that I practically clawed my way to my keyboard to google if there was a book #2.
edited to add: This really isn't a proper 'romance' book, I'm not quite sure why it's in this category honestly. It was more of a paranormal thriller that, like many novels, had a few small romantic moments (I think a whopping two kisses) and mostly was about a woman's journey through some adventures and paranormal experiences. If you're looking for love scenes or epic, yearny romance... this is perhaps not the book for you. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Elizabeth has always seen and been able to interpret auras, but her early experiences and her father's advice have cautioned her not only to keep that secret, but to mute it. Then she senses the her husband's boss is too interested in her - for her abilities. Her nightmare, or perhaps nightmares begins. The story moves well, but at the end leaves the impression that it wasn't all that well put together. And the action scenes are full of annoying repetitions.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5As long as she can remember, Elizabeth Cage has been able to see auras or color emanations ebbing and flowing around people. From these auras, she can discern the person's character, what they know, and their truthfulness. What government would not give to use such gifts. Cage learns how much when her husband who Director of Security of Security for a plush psychiatric clinic dies suddently from an apparent heart attack and she finds herself committed to the facility by the director, Dr. Sorenson, who advises governments in psychological warfare. Cage doesn't know what he has planned for her, but she knows she needs to escape before she finds out.Having read and enjoyed the author's Chronicles of St. Mary's time travel series, I thought I would give this a try. Like the former, this book of the Elizabeth Cage series includes several adventures. This one even involves a short time travel trip but, in this case, aided by a ghost rather than a machine. Cage's character seems to be more insecure than the protagonist of the former series; however, I'm sure she will grow as the series continue. While each story in the fomer series are more standalone, the inaugural book in the current series seemed to be a "to-be-continued" in the subsequent novel. If you are a fan of St. Mary's series, you might consider picking up this series up.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is seriously an amazing novel. I’ve adored Taylor’s Chronicles of St. Mary’s novels since stumbling across them late last year, and I’m slowly purchasing them all (one by one) so I can reread them at leisure. But I’d never strayed outside the CoSM world until now....
I’ve got to say that not only is this series as good as the CoSM series, but maybe even better...! I was hooked from the very beginning of this novel, and I ADORE the characters...! I was wholly invested and completely at the mercy of Taylor’s plotline and feeling-wrenching abilities, throughout the novel. And lord, that ending...! I actually cried a little, for a while...... man!
This series needs MANY MANY MORE BOOKS in it, pretty please, Ma’am...?
So if your library has this novel, PLEASE go out and reserve it today. It’s seriously worth it! And if you don’t get so invested in it that you stay up WAY too late at night reading, well then I’m a monkey’s uncle. (But no, I won’t eat my hat because I don’t own any except for yarn caps I’ve made myself. And I don’t want to choke! 😂).
If you cannot wait to read this novel, and you really shouldn’t (!!!), well it’s only $3.99 at amazon right now. No, I don’t work for amazon...... lol.
5 huge stars, and recommended to anyone and everyone! Like now! GET IT NOW.
