    Thank you!

Thank you for your purchase of this book. I truly appreciate your patience and your perseverance I this hi-tech world. It motivates me when people are willing to invest the time to learn and improve. I also appreciate that you could have chosen any book and you picked this one! Thank you! I truly appreciate it. Now let’s get busy, you didn’t think I was going to suck up to you for the entire book, did you? We have stuff to learn! Pay attention!

    Where Did I Learn This?

I have been in the tech industry for over 30 years, and over 25 doing wireless. I’ve worked on LMR (Land Mobile Radio) systems, 2-way radio, public safety, paging, trunked systems, cell systems, IMTS, and so much more.

I’ve had jobs in the industry that range from RF engineer, microwave engineer, tower climber, technical sales, sales engineer, manager, field engineer, broadcast engineer, manager, vice president, consultant, solutions manager, and the list goes on. Regardless of the title, I have always wanted to improve the tech industry. I see this as my outlet.

Now we have so many wireless choices, but the number of players has dropped. In the USA, the carriers rule 80% of the industry while everyone else tries to find their space. Wi-Fi is the license free alternative that helped other get creative and deploy in very small ways. As you can see the free space worked since most people rely on Wi-Fi to connect to the internet.

Don’t get me wrong, I love wireless, but we would not be anywhere without fiber. I love fiber because it enables us to connect to that other great invention, the internet. I love the internet because it opens the world for all to learn. It can be a waste of time, so pay attention to how you use your time. It is hard sometimes, but we should be aware of how we spend our time.

So, there is my story. I am trying to use my powers for good and teach you something from my years of experience. Be brave and move ahead!

    Preface

So, you want to learn more about 5G in the real world. Well, I am here to help with a collection of 5G blogs that I wrote over the last 3 years. If you can’t believe that we have been talking about 5G since 2014, neither can I. Now we can see it might really happen.

The carriers don’t get too excited about new technology. Well, let me rephrase that. The marketing department loves new tech because they have something to brag about and advertise. The engineers have a love hate relationship because they get to play with something new, but then they should make it work in the real world. The finance guys hate it because they know it’s going to be a huge expense to upgrade.

That’s the beauty of LTE! It will be the foundation for 5G. At least for the carriers. If you deploy systems, it really sucks. The main reason is the industry is creating better and better hardware that can be upgraded with new software. The hardware is being built to handle way more than it could before. So now the services in the field will slowly decline.

That’s the plan for the carriers. After all, LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It makes sense, right?

Don’t worry, with the release of new spectrum and LTE in unlicensed bands. We will have plenty of disruptors out there that will allow everyone to enter the market. How cool is that? The pipe is a new opportunity for anyone!

So, sit back and learn more about 5G in the real world.

    Overview

This little book should help you understand 5G from a field perspective. It’s here to help you grasp what 5G is all about. It is not about wave forms or the details of how the over the air protocols work. If you want that there are plenty of good research books about that. This book is just a field engineers overview of what it takes to understand 5G in the real world.

You want to learn more about the new technology that is coming out? Well here it is, just for you. You can get a head start on the other people in the wireless industry by understanding the 5G systems that will be deployed throughout the world. This should help you gain a better understanding of 5G systems in the real world.

    •  What is 5G?

    •  What is Network Splicing?

    •  What is the evolution of 5G?

    •  Who really wants a next generation?

Find your answers to these and more in this book!

Let’s face it, when you work in wireless, you often deal more with why an antenna doesn’t cover well or what you expect from 5G. Knowing that it uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, OFDM doesn’t really help you plan or deploy a network. In fact, unless you’re working on a device, it really doesn’t matter.

It is important to know about it because it is the foundation for most of the high-speed wireless devices that we use today. It’s really cool to know, but in the field, it doesn’t help much at all. I just need to know how it should work.

So, read on and learn my friends. Let’s have some fun getting to know this better.

    Who is this book for?

For anyone who may be interested in working on 5G systems or in the wireless technology industry. This book is concentrating on 5G concepts. If you are reading this, you could be an installer, tower climber, commissioning engineer, RF design engineer, optimization team, or anyone interested in how 5G works in the field.

I really want to help others move ahead and learn from what I have learned. Feel free to contact
