    About the Author

    Prologue

The rainforest of Ryland 7 was stunningly beautiful. No humanoids lived here, the only area of the entire planet that was unharmed by civilization. There were several large cities to the outside of this paradise, ruled by the glaneks, enemy of humans and most other species. From what I had heard, the vile creatures were afraid to enter the rainforest because of insects. The bite of several types could prove fatal to their species. If it weren't for that natural deterrent, there wouldn't be any beauty left on the entire planet.

The funny thing was: I couldn't remember how I got here. It must have been via a shuttle from the nearest space station, but my memory was blank in that regard. Maybe Galactic Command had ordered my short-term memory be erased in case I was captured. That had to be it.

Fortunately, I wasn't alone. Trig Hunter was by my side. He was the cutest boy from my senior class and happened to have a thing for me. I have to admit, the feeling was mutual. We hadn't been on a date as of yet, but this little adventure would surely set us up for one.

Trig was wearing brown trousers and a sleeveless shirt that showed off his bulging biceps. Normally, I didn't care for that look on a boy but it worked for Trig. The atmosphere around us made him look even more appealing. Wild and unpredictable. That described both the rainforest and Trig.

I hoped I looked just as good in my grey trousers and short-sleeve shirt. By the way Trig looked at me, I could be fairly certain that I did. If this were Earth, we could get to know each other on a whole new level in this environment. It was perfect for young romance. But this was Ryland 7, home of the murderous glaneks. Our current priority was survival. Romance would have to wait for a more suitable time.

Each of us wore a holster on one thigh with a pistol inside. At least we had some protection should we encounter any of the hostiles. This style of gun was new to me, but I was quite good at shooting my Glock back home. Of course, that used actual bullets. This sleek little weapon in my holster fired lasers. That shouldn't make too much difference in accuracy. Even if it did, I was a fast learner.

Trig pointed to our right and said, The glanek scout party is that way.

Scout party? When did this happen? I checked my belt, and then Trig's to make sure neither of us carried a radio. We didn't, so how could he possibly know there was a glanek patrol? As far as anyone knew, the alien creatures would never even enter the rainforest. I felt like a large piece of a puzzle was missing, but Trig seemed to have a handle on things and I didn't feel like questioning him, so I just went with it.

We pulled our guns. Trying to walk as quietly as we could, we slowly made our way in the direction Trig had pointed out. Gruff, muffled voices up ahead caused my heart to flutter. I couldn't say with any certainty that the voices belonged to glaneks, but I was willing to bet a lot on it.

As we closed in, we could see several glaneks sitting around a campfire, roasting some unrecognizable animal. Trig and I hid behind trees, moving from one to another as we attempted to get a little closer. Our weapons should have pretty good range, and we didn't want to get too close and become easy targets ourselves, but a little closer would be helpful.

We stopped about twenty yards out and studied the situation. Glaneks were a warrior species, very hefty, typically five to six feet tall, brown, with an armored shell. Very difficult to kill. Even lasers wouldn't penetrate their protective armor. There were several spots unprotected - head, neck, armpits, and both sides of the groin. Anyplace where the body needed to be free of armor to allow movement. In order to kill them, very precise shots had to be executed. With insects that the aliens were sensitive to, the bugs would need to sting or bite those areas as well. It would be much more difficult to shoot the small targets than to sting them.

Looks like seven of them, Trig remarked. We need to open fire at the same time. Go for the head.

While Trig was great to look at, he wasn't all that bright. Don't get me wrong. He was smarter than a box of rocks, but not by a lot. Go for the head? Of course that was what I would target. It was right on top of the body and the largest unprotected area.

Just as we took aim, very close to beginning our assault, a voice behind us said, Chi ti manik opum.

We both looked back and found two glaneks with guns pointed at us. Oh, crap. This wasn't supposed to go down this way. The ambushers had become the ambushees.

Trig gave me a sly look. It was his way of telling me we were going to fight these two so be ready. Of course we didn't have a choice but to do just that. It was rumored that glaneks didn't take prisoners. Well, they did, until they became hungry, and humans were on the menu. We weren't about to become anyone's meal, even if that meant killing ourselves. Yet once we opened fire on these two, the others, now behind us, would hear and be on full alert. Not good. There was no way, even with our skill level, that we could fight them off as they came up behind us.

We must have read each other's mind because Trig and I lifted our guns at the same moment and fired head shots at the two before us. They fell back to the ground instantly. Already, we could hear glanek chatter in the background as footsteps raced in our direction. Trig took me by the hand and forced me to run along with him in the opposite direction. I wasn't a big fan of the retreat, but this was a case that called for it.

The glaneks stayed with us. At least they weren't faster. As they ran, they fired shots that came very close. If these were military soldiers, I had to wonder how they were so terrible with their weapons. Trig and I should have been riddled with holes. Instead, we were both fully in tact.

Just as I started to grow weary and wonder how we would ever lose these things, the ground beneath our feet came to an end. We stood at the edge of a cliff overlooking a raging river about twenty yards below. There was a good number of boulders in the water, too.

With the glaneks closing in, there wasn't time to discuss a plan. There was one forced upon us. We jumped. The plummet took my breath away. I had never free fallen that far before. With the number of boulders blocking our entry points into the water, I was fairly certain that one or both of us would strike them and die at impact.

When I hit the water free and clear, I descended several yards before stopping and reversing course for the surface. I sucked in a deep breath of oxygen as soon as I broke through and searched around me for Trig. I had been lucky to miss the boulders, but it was nearly impossible that he would have done the same.

The water's current swept me downstream. It was difficult to stay afloat, but I was a pretty good swimmer. I searched around me for Trig's body so I could at least return it to his family. Instead, I found Trig also battling the current just ahead of me. Awesome! We had both managed to survive certain death. It must have been our lucky day, besides having a glanek scouting party out to kill us. The rest of the day had been good.

We both fought our way over to the same side and managed to drag ourselves into shallow water. From there, it was easy to collapse on the riverbank, partially submerged. I'm not going to lie; it felt great just to rest for a moment after our harrowing experience.

This was strange. Each of us had our gun in hand when we jumped. We should have lost them at impact, and I thought mine was definitely gone. I felt something uncomfortable as I lay slightly on my right hip and noticed my gun was in the holster, where it should be. There was no rational explanation for this that I could concoct. A look at Trig's holster revealed his gun was present as well. Maybe we had put them away before jumping and hadn't realized we did.

To my surprise, Trig gazed at me in a way I had never seen from him. This was a look of interest. Or lust. Maybe both. I couldn't look good with my wet hair, soaked clothing, and a muddy bed. Still, those very things applied to Trig also and he was as hot as ever.

Have I ever told you how beautiful you are? he asked.

I was almost ashamed of how the mere question caused me to melt. No boy had ever done that to me before. No, you haven't, I replied.

    Well, I'm telling you now.

Trig moved in for a kiss. I was more than ready. Just as our lips were about to meet, footsteps coming up behind us interrupted our moment. We looked back to find the full glanek patrol watching us, guns aimed. There was no way we were getting out of this one. If we reached for our weapons, we would be dead before we could touch them. We were going to be dead no matter what we did.

That realization apparently struck us both because we returned our attention to each other. We weren't going to die without our first kiss. To hell with what the glaneks wanted. At least I would
