      The green glow from the cheap radio alarm clock said it started at two a.m. precisely. A deafening drip forced Will Aston's red-rimmed eyes open and his rail-thin, pasty body to bolt upright on the lumpy, uncomfortable mattress.

      Somewhere a dripping tap had interrupted his already tenuous attempt at slumber.

      It had taken him five hours and five hundred miles to find this isolated motel off route seventy-three. He was desperate to find peace and quiet and sleep.
