About this ebook

Readers won’t need to have read Snotty Saves the Day or Lily the Silent, to love The Lizard Princess, the third novel in The History of Arcadia series, which features the compelling, wild and wisdom-making adventures of Lily's daughter, in her discovery of her True Self. . .how she becomes the great queen of Arcadia, Sophia the Wise. . . . .with the additions of an Arcadian scientific treatise, an afterword by Sophia's granddaughter Shanti, and the story of how the book came to Exterminating Angel Press.

With its winning female protagonist, accessible storyline, fantastical settings, Arthur Rackham-like illustrations, and powerful message—The Lizard Princess should inspire readers to (re)discover the first two books in the series and seek out more from the land of Arcadia, and from its next title, too .

The first two novels in The History of Arcadia series were embraced as crossover titles, prompting critics and booksellers to ask readers to “imagine Lewis Carroll with footnotes by Jonathan Swift” while others made comparisons to Nicholson Baker, the Spiderwick Chronicles, Susanna Clark’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Homer, C.S. Lewis, the New Testament, Descartes, L. Frank Baum, Doris Lessing, and Joseph Campbell.

I think this would be a fun book for a (very) young reader, as it is an original style, told more like a fairytale, with odd artwork, and the part where the Arcadian books have been sent as parcels from Arcadia to here is just a fun concept. That said... I didn't find it very interesting. I believe a young reader would enjoy it for its novelty (and it's really not that long), but I got bored. I wondered if I'd get into the story more if I read the previous histories, so I bought Snotty Saves the Day, and boy was that weird. Kinda fun. Definitely a young-kid thing (esp. the name 'Snotty' which kids would find hilarious). BUT even having read the history, I was not particularly inclined to continue with the Lizard Princess. I want to stress though that I would recommend this to a young reader. Also, the covers are really pretty, high quality soft material.I hope the author keeps trying and finds his audience!(Received this book from LibraryThing Early Reviewer program in exchange for an honest review.)

I read The Lizard Princess without having read Snotty Saves the Day or Lily the Silent and even though this book is supposed to be self-sufficient, I found the first third of the book to spend way too much time trying to explain the context of the characters in a way that disrupted the flow of the story. I saw that Jack Zipes gave the book a positive, if brief, review ("Imaginative.") and that definitely made me want to spend time trying to see what he saw in it, but I just never got there. Maybe if you read the other two books in the series the characters would be more appealing, I just couldn't get interested in them though.
