About this ebook

In this book, Maria Alomajan shows that dogs should be revered for their remarkable achievements in improving human life. She tells the stories of a great variety of dogs, from their initial selection for work to their training, work experiences and relationships with their handlers and masters. Each story is fleshed out with colourful and sometimes surprising anecdotes based on her interviews with the owners of the animals. From tracking poachers across the great African reserves to digging for avalanche survivors on the snow-covered slopes of Switzerland; from finding endangered whale excrement in the North Atlantic to locating lost families in the South Pacific; from leading the blind in Australia to assisting with scientific research in Thailand; from detecting hidden explosives in war-torn Afghanistan to comforting the elderly in New Zealand, the dogs in this book will both impress and amaze you.

Dogs are amazing. They not only make great pets, but they help humans do jobs that would otherwise take many more people, or simply could not be done without the help of a dog’s superior nose. This book details these jobs, and features a dog, or several dogs, that perform them. I enjoyed learning about many different working dogs, some from New Zealand, many from around the world. I learned that there are several types of search and rescue dogs, trained in different ways, there are dogs trained to detect bed bugs, and there are even dogs that prevent suicide or help people with mental illness. There are mat colour photos of each dog, some better quality then others. If you’re researching service dogs, this book may not go into enough detail, as it’s quite short, but for beginning research, or if you’re a dog lover, this book is be worth a look.
