Marcus Lofton hated the ambiance of the bank’s cramped conference room. The faux-wood wall paneling, the faux-wood conference table, and the faux-faces on the people sitting in faux-leather chairs all offended him .

A more appropriate setting for closing on Marcus’s new house would’ve been a mountaintop. For that’s how Marcus felt—like he’d made it to the pinnacle. And he was only thirty-one.

Looked good, too. Machowski had worn it for the last thirty-five years of his life. And now it was Marcus’s, as were several other of the great man’s personal items.
