Chapter 1 – The Pub Brawl
Pub brawling has a long history in Australia, and is often mentioned in stories about remote Outback towns.
City hotels are not immune to the phenomenon, but it doesn’t happen as much today.
The correct brawling etiquette has always been to ask someone outside, but not everyone makes it out in time.
And then there are the sucker-punchers.
My pub-going years caught the tail end of a pub-brawling era.
Or perhaps it was just the beginning of a quiet period, before drugs like crystal meth hit the streets and the aggro started up again. Being a part-time musician, I often worked in pubs.
The most brawls I saw were in Queensland’s capital city of Brisbane.
The Banyo Tavern was my local in the 1980s, and it had a reliable carpark brawl at closing time most Friday nights, after the disco

It wasn’t just the men shaping up. Women also joined in.
Other suburban Brisbane pubs weren’t much better. I reckon it was the rum that Queenslanders loved to drink. Too much sugar.
Once, at an inner city venue, I watched from stage as a girl picked up a glass and calmly walked to another table and smashed it into a woman’s face.
Just like that.
At Brisbane pubs, in the mid 1980s, you could sometimes feel the aggro when you walked in.
